Short answer: the JBL Pulse 5. It ranks #48 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality (rated 3.7/5) at $219.99 and is still sold new; the JBL Flip 4 ranks #83 (rated 3.3/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The JBL Flip 4’s replacement, the JBL Flip 7, is rated 4.2/5 at $89.95.
The JBL Pulse 5 is the better-sounding, deeper-bass option. A cool light show, though it is not synced to the music like the Pulse 2. Its bass reaches about 58Hz before falling 10dB, against 66Hz for the JBL Flip 4. It has an adjustable EQ, which the JBL Flip 4 lacks. It charges over USB-C rather than Micro USB. Watch for: Bass does not reach as deep as others, and the plastic scratches easily.
The JBL Flip 4 is the lighter choice. At 1.1 lbs (510 g), JBL Flip 4 combines 2x 40mm fullrange with Bluetooth and aux. At 1.1 lbs (510 g) it weighs much less than the JBL Pulse 5 at 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg). It keeps a wired aux input, which the JBL Pulse 5 lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the JBL Pulse 5. Watch for: Battery failures are common.
Buy the JBL Pulse 5. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the JBL Flip 4 is discontinued, so it is only available used.
