Speaker Frequency Response Explained - What 20Hz-20kHz Really Means

Frequency response is the range of pitches a speaker reproduces, written as a low and high limit in hertz. It only means something when a tolerance such as ±3dB is attached - without one, the range says a speaker produces something at that frequency, not that you can hear it.

It’s the most quoted speaker specification and, as manufacturers write it, one of the least useful. Here’s how to read the honest version.

What Does ±3dB Mean In Frequency Response?

It’s the permitted deviation. 19-200Hz, ±3dB means output stays within a 3 dB band across that whole range, which is a real, checkable claim. Compare two entries from the speakers ranked here:

The second says only that the speaker emits something at 70 Hz. It could be 20 dB down and inaudible in a room. Of the 312 ranked speakers publishing a frequency response, most are the second kind, which is why our rankings are built on independent measurements rather than this field.

A speaker claiming “20 Hz” with no tolerance and a subwoofer measuring 19-200Hz ±3dB are not comparable claims, even though the first number looks better.

What Does A Frequency Response Curve Show?

The specification is a compressed summary of a graph: output level plotted against frequency. What matters is not where the line ends but how flat it is in the middle, because that region carries voices and instruments.

Flat is the goal. A curve that rises at both ends sounds impressive for a minute and fatiguing over an hour. This “V-shaped” tuning is the default on most consumer Bluetooth speakers.

Peaks are worse than dips. A narrow spike draws attention to itself on every track; a gentle dip is often inaudible.

Off-axis response matters nearly as much. Most of what reaches your ears in a room has bounced off a wall first, so a speaker that measures flat straight ahead but ragged to the side sounds different in every room.

Is A Wider Frequency Range Better?

Not at the top. Human hearing tops out near 20 kHz in children and falls with age, with most adults finished by 16-17 kHz. A speaker advertising 40 kHz is not selling audible sound.

What Should I Read Instead?

Bass extension with a stated -3dB or -10dB point, the honest version of the left-hand number. 346 ranked speakers have it.

CEA-2010-A for subwoofers, which measures how loud each bass frequency plays before distorting rather than whether it exists at all.

The ranking position, which reflects measurements from independent reviewers instead of a manufacturer’s claim.
