Flat on-axis response, and a smooth off-axis curve. The first is what you hear directly, the second is what the room sends back at you a few milliseconds later. A monitor that measures flat on-axis but has a ragged off-axis response will sound different in every room it’s put in. Both are in the measurements linked on each pick.
Balanced inputs. XLR or TRS reject noise picked up over a cable run, which matters when the speaker sits next to a computer, an interface and a rack of gear. Of the powered speakers ranked here, 154 have XLR and 72 have TRS, and almost all of them are monitors.
Nearfield or midfield. Follow the model’s recommended listening distance and orientation rather than choosing by woofer diameter alone. Driver integration, vertical directivity and clean output all matter.
Appropriate DSP and tuning. DSP can improve crossover behavior, tonal accuracy and bass extension. Use the measured reference tuning and appropriate boundary settings; room correction is useful but cannot fix every reflection or output limitation.
Include the room in the plan. Placement, treatment and alignment remain important at every price. Budget for stands, cables, a volume-controlled source and, where needed, a subwoofer.
