What Actually Matters In A Monitor

Flat on-axis response, and a smooth off-axis curve. The first is what you hear directly, the second is what the room sends back at you a few milliseconds later. A monitor that measures flat on-axis but has a ragged off-axis response will sound different in every room it’s put in. Both are in the measurements linked on each pick.

Balanced inputs. XLR or TRS reject noise picked up over a cable run, which matters when the speaker sits next to a computer, an interface and a rack of gear. Of the powered speakers ranked here, 34 have XLR and 13 have TRS, and almost all of them are monitors.

Nearfield or midfield. A 5” monitor is designed to be listened to at about a metre. An 8” three-way wants two or three metres and a room to work in. Buying the larger monitor for a small desk usually makes things worse, not better.

No loudness compensation, no bass boost, no “enhancement.” These are the features that make consumer speakers enjoyable and monitors useless. If a spec sheet is proud of its DSP bass extension, it isn’t a monitor.

Cons: High price. Companion app for EQ/setup is iPad-only - no Android or Bluetooth option despite being control-only. There’s a dip in energy around the crossover that gets worse with ceiling/rear-wall reflections, and in one reviewer’s listening test the smoother-measuring KH80 actually sounded smaller and less present than the cheaper JBL 305P MKII, which had more perceived bass and clarity despite measuring worse.

A built-in limiter makes it essentially impossible to push into mechanical distress - no cabinet buzzing, woofer bottoming, or audible failure even driven hard to 80-95dB in testing. Distortion stays below 1% THD at 86dB and under 3% at 96dB, largely thanks to that limiter. Frequency response and dynamic behavior stay essentially unchanged from 76dB up to 96dB/1m before the limiter engages around 96-102dB. Bass extends smoothly to about 50Hz. A clear step up in linearity over the original V1 version both on-axis and in estimated in-room response, and eliminates the hiss that drew complaints on the V1.
