What Actually Matters In A Monitor
Even sound in every direction. You hear the speaker directly and also its sound bouncing off the room. A monitor that sounds even both ways will translate better from room to room.
Balanced inputs. XLR or TRS reject noise over a cable run, which matters next to a computer and interface. Of the powered speakers ranked here, 163 have XLR and 64 have TRS, and almost all of them are monitors.
Nearfield or midfield. Follow the maker’s recommended listening distance rather than choosing by woofer size alone.
Tuning and the room. Use the reference tuning and the right boundary setting. Room correction helps but can’t fix everything, so budget for stands, placement, treatment and, where needed, a subwoofer.
