This page ranks 26 commercial installation speakers built to mount on a wall or ceiling: the small boxes that play background and foreground music in restaurants, shops, bars, hotel lobbies and offices. Prices are per speaker unless stated otherwise.
Nearly all are passive, and many include a transformer for 70V or 100V distributed systems, so one amplifier can drive a whole zone of speakers on a single long cable run. They are judged on even tonal balance and smooth coverage at moderate levels rather than maximum output, and most need a subwoofer for full bass in a larger room.
Column speakers and line arrays for speech in larger reverberant rooms are ranked separately as column and line array PA speakers, and portable or rigged compact PA tops are under compact 5 to 6.5-inch PA speakers.
Manufacturer maximum-SPL claims are measured under different conditions from one brand to the next, so treat them as a rough guide rather than a precise comparison.

#1 JBL Control 24CT: $350.00 per pair Passive Amazon eBay
Pros: A 4” two-way ceiling speaker for background and foreground music with a coaxial 3/4” titanium-coated tweeter, a 130 degree conical coverage pattern and a built-in transformer for 70V and 100V distributed systems. JBL’s data shows a very even listening window (0.13 deviation), for a preference score of 7.35.
Cons: It has no 8 ohm bypass, so it needs a 70V or 100V amplifier rather than a normal home amplifier. Output is limited to 102dB, and the on-axis response is less even (1.14 average deviation) because it is meant to be heard off-axis from the ceiling. That data comes from JBL.

Pros: A weather-resistant (IP65) surface-mount installation speaker from Electro-Voice with a 5.25” woofer and a tweeter, for 70V and 100V systems or low impedance. EV’s measurements show a preference score of 2.44 that reaches 6.05 with an ideal subwoofer, with 0.55 listening window deviation.
Cons: Bass is very limited, so it needs a subwoofer for full-range music, and the on-axis response is uneven (1.29 average deviation). The data comes from EV. Bass reaches 150.0Hz (-3dB) and about 82Hz (-10dB).

Pros: A passive installation loudspeaker from d&b’s xS-Series alongside the measured DB Audiotechnik 44S and DB Audiotechnik 8S: a compact 5” bass-reflex model that reaches lower than the 4S. d&b rates it at 118dB maximum SPL with a range of 80Hz - 20kHz (-5dB) when driven by its matched d&b amplifier presets.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so it can’t be compared with ranked PA speakers. It is meant to run from d&b amplifiers with the matching preset and is sold only through d&b dealers, so there is no retail price.

Pros: A passive installation loudspeaker from d&b’s xS-Series alongside the measured DB Audiotechnik 44S and DB Audiotechnik 8S: the ultra-compact 4” model, weighing just 1 kg, for fills and discreet installs. d&b rates it at 115dB maximum SPL with a range of 130Hz - 20kHz (-5dB) when driven by its matched d&b amplifier presets.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so it can’t be compared with ranked PA speakers. It is meant to run from d&b amplifiers with the matching preset and is sold only through d&b dealers, so there is no retail price.

#6 JBL AC28/26: $1,990.00 each Passive Estimated Amazon eBay
Same family: the JBL AC15 (smaller model, ranked lower, estimated 2.6/5), the JBL AC16 (smaller model, ranked lower, estimated 2.8/5), the JBL AC25 (smaller model, ranked lower, rated 2.6/5), the JBL AC26 (smaller model, ranked lower, estimated 2.9/5) and the JBL AC18/26 (smaller model, ranked lower, estimated 3/5).
Pros: A compact JBL Professional installation speaker from the same AC range as the measured JBL AC25: two 8” woofers with a rotatable 120° x 60° horn, the largest of the compact models. JBL rates it at 94dB sensitivity and 120dB maximum SPL with 120° x 60° coverage and bass to 53Hz (-10dB), in an enclosure weighing 18.6 kg with mounting points for walls and ceilings.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so it can’t be compared with ranked PA speakers. It is a passive installation speaker that needs an amplifier and, for best results, JBL’s recommended EQ, and the only measured AC model scored poorly, so treat the estimate with caution.

#7 Martin Audio CDD6: $550.00 each Passive Estimated Full Compass eBay
Same family: the Martin Audio CDD-LIVE 8 (smallest powered model, estimated 3.4/5), the Martin Audio CDD-LIVE 12 (powered model, estimated 3.1/5), the Martin Audio CDD-LIVE 15 (largest powered model, estimated 3.5/5), the Martin Audio CDD5 (smaller passive model, ranked lower, estimated 3/5), the Martin Audio CDD8 (larger passive model, rated 3.2/5), the Martin Audio CDD10 (larger passive model, rated 3.1/5), the Martin Audio CDD12 (larger passive model, rated 2.9/5) and the Martin Audio CDD15 (larger passive model, rated 3.3/5).
Pros: A passive Coaxial Differential Dispersion speaker from the same Martin Audio CDD line as the measured Martin Audio CDD8 and Martin Audio CDD10: a 6.5” coaxial driver in a cabinet small enough for discreet installs. CDD widens the horizontal pattern close to the speaker and narrows it with distance, which keeps level more even from front to back of a room.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so it can’t be compared with ranked PA speakers. It needs an external amplifier, and its small woofer limits bass and output, so larger rooms need a subwoofer or bigger CDD models.

Pros: A compact surface-mount speaker for commercial installations with a 5.25” woofer and a dome tweeter, weather-resistant for covered outdoor use. Yamaha’s measurements show a preference score of 1.86 that reaches 5.17 with an ideal subwoofer, with 0.59 listening window deviation.
Cons: Bass is limited, so it needs a subwoofer for full-range music, and the on-axis response is uneven (0.95 average deviation). The data comes from Yamaha. Bass reaches 95.0Hz (-3dB) and about 70Hz (-10dB).

#9 Yamaha VXS8: $662.98 per pair Passive Estimated B&H Photo Video eBay
Same family: the Yamaha VXS1ML (smaller model, ranked lower, estimated 2.4/5), the Yamaha VXS3F (smaller model, ranked lower, rated 2.6/5) and the Yamaha VXS5 (smaller model, ranked higher, rated 3/5).
Pros: The 8-inch model of Yamaha’s VXS surface-mount range, a larger sibling of the measured Yamaha VXS5 with an 8” woofer and a 1” soft dome tweeter. Yamaha rates it at 91dB sensitivity and 117dB maximum SPL with bass to 51Hz (-10dB), so it reaches lower than the 5.25” model, and a transformer tap lets it run on 70V/100V lines or at low impedance.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so it can’t be compared with ranked PA speakers. It is an installation speaker sold in pairs, with no built-in amplifier and a dome tweeter that limits output compared with horn-loaded PA boxes.

Cons: No independent measurements yet, so it can’t be compared with ranked PA speakers. It is a passive installation speaker that needs an amplifier and, for best results, JBL’s recommended EQ, and the only measured AC model scored poorly, so treat the estimate with caution.

#21 Yamaha VXS1ML: $96.99 per pair Passive Estimated Amazon eBay
Same family: the Yamaha VXS3F (larger model, ranked higher, rated 2.6/5), the Yamaha VXS5 (larger model, ranked higher, rated 3/5) and the Yamaha VXS8 (larger model, ranked higher, estimated 3/5).
Pros: The smallest of Yamaha’s VXS surface-mount speakers, a single 1.5” full-range driver with a neodymium magnet and very wide 170° dispersion, so a few units can cover a large room for background music. It sits below the measured Yamaha VXS3F and is meant to pair with Yamaha’s VXS3S compact subwoofer.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so it can’t be compared with ranked PA speakers. A 1.5” driver alone has little bass, so it needs a subwoofer for anything beyond background music and speech.

Same family: the Bose DesignMax DM5SE (smaller model, ranked lower, rated 2.2/5) and the Bose DesignMax DM6SE (smaller model, ranked lower, rated 2.2/5).
Pros: The outdoor-rated replacement for the measured Bose DesignMax DM8S, keeping its 8” woofer and center-firing coaxial 1” compression driver with 150W handling and a 52Hz to 20kHz range.
