Speaker dB Output Explained - What Max Volume And SPL Numbers Mean

dB SPL (sound pressure level) measures how loud a sound actually is, on a logarithmic scale where +10dB sounds roughly twice as loud and +3dB is a physical doubling of the sound energy. A “Max Volume” spec is only meaningful once you know the distance and test method behind it - and for most portable speakers, neither is disclosed.

What Does dB SPL Actually Mean?

Decibels are logarithmic, not linear, which is the single most important thing to understand about them. A few reference points for intuition:

Why Is dB Logarithmic? The 3dB And 10dB Rules

+3 dB is a doubling of sound power. Go from 100 W to 200 W of amplifier output and, all else equal, you gain about 3 dB. This is the same rule behind speaker sensitivity: every 3 dB of sensitivity halves the amplifier power needed for the same volume.

+10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud to a human ear, even though it represents ten times the sound power. Perceived loudness and physical sound energy scale very differently, which is why a “small” spec difference on paper can be a large difference in the room, and a “huge” one can be barely noticeable.

What Does “Max Volume” Mean On A Portable Speaker?

Across the 168 ranked portable speakers that publish a Max Volume figure, the range runs from 79 dB (JBL Clip 4) to 126 dB (Electro-Voice Everse 12, Soundboks 3, Soundboks 4) - a huge spread, and one that’s hard to trust at face value.

The problem: it’s rarely a standardized measurement. A manufacturer’s “110 dB” and another’s “110 dB” may be measured at different distances, with different content (a sine tone plays louder than music), and with different distortion tolerances. Unlike CEA-2010-A for subwoofers, there is no industry-standard test that portable speaker manufacturers are required to follow for this number, and even a reviewer’s own hands-on figure is one measurement in one room, not a repeatable lab standard.

We remove a figure outright when it isn’t a real value at all - a placeholder like “not specified” copied verbatim from a spec sheet, rather than an actual number - but we don’t apply a single blanket sourcing rule beyond that. Most figures here come from independent reviewers testing the speaker directly rather than a bare manufacturer claim, and Soundboks and Electro-Voice are trusted on their own published rating since both are livesound-market brands where a real SPL figure is the industry norm.

It still doesn’t track wattage the way you’d expect. The Soundboks 2 (3 x 72 W) and the Electro-Voice Everse 12 (400 W) publish nearly identical Max Volume figures, 124 dB and 126 dB. Driver efficiency and cabinet design matter more than the amplifier number - the same point made in why wattage doesn’t tell you much.

Even a reviewer’s own figure is one measurement, not a lab standard. A single test in one room, at one distance, on one day is more trustworthy than a marketing claim, but it’s still not CEA-2010-A’s standardized, repeatable burst test. Treat it as a solid same-brand comparison rather than a certified spec.

What Does “Max SPL” Mean?

A smaller set of speakers here - mostly studio monitors and premium powered speakers - publish Max SPL instead, which is closer to a real measurement: Neumann KH80 DSP at 110.7 dB, Genelec 8361A at 118 dB, Neumann KH420 at 124 dB.

Even this needs the fine print read. The measurement conditions vary: most are stated “@ 1m”, some specify “continuous” versus a burst, some are “pink noise” rather than a sine tone, and at least one prominent example is measured per pair rather than per speaker (HEDD Type 20 MK2, 120 dB per pair - not 120 dB from one cabinet). Two Max SPL numbers are only comparable when the conditions behind them match.

Why Do Subwoofers Get Multiple SPL Numbers Instead Of One?

Because a single “how loud” figure would hide the thing that actually matters: how loud a subwoofer plays at each individual bass frequency, which varies enormously within one cabinet.

Take the SVS PB-1000 Pro, a well-regarded subwoofer ranked on this site. Its measured output:

That’s a 21 dB spread across one subwoofer - roughly four doublings of perceived loudness between its deepest and its strongest frequency. A single “Max Volume: 117 dB” spec on this product would be true and completely misleading about what it does at 15 Hz, which is exactly the range deep movie effects live in.

This is why subwoofer rankings on this site are built on CEA-2010-A, a standardized burst test that measures output at each frequency separately rather than collapsing a subwoofer’s performance into one number.

Distance Changes Everything

Sound pressure follows the inverse square law: SPL drops by roughly 6 dB every time you double the distance from the source. A speaker rated at 110 dB “at 1 metre” is closer to 104 dB at 2 metres and roughly 92 dB at 8 metres. A spec with no stated distance is not comparable to one that states it, and neither tells you what you’ll actually hear across a real room.

What To Actually Trust

In order of reliability: the ranking position (built from independent, consistent measurements across every speaker in a class) beats Max SPL with stated conditions, which beats a bare Max Volume figure, which beats wattage alone - see why speaker watts don’t tell you much.
