The Two Numbers That Decide This
Sensitivity is how loud a speaker plays with one watt at one metre. It’s logarithmic, so small numbers mean large differences: every 3 dB halves the power you need.
An 87 dB speaker needs twice the power of a 90 dB one, and four times a 93 dB one, for the same volume. Put concretely, driving an 84 dB bookshelf speaker to a realistic listening level in a normal room can ask for 100 watts, while a 94 dB speaker gets there on about 10. That’s the difference between a speaker a tube amp can drive and one it can’t.
Impedance is the electrical load. A nominal 8 ohm speaker is comfortable for almost any amplifier. A 4 ohm speaker draws twice the current, which most solid-state amps handle and most tube amps do not, at least not without using the correct output tap. Where a manufacturer quotes a nominal figure it’s in the spec table, but note that nominal impedance hides dips: a “6 ohm” speaker may drop to 3 ohms somewhere in the bass.
