A higher Bluetooth version does not mean better sound. The version governs range, power use, connection stability and which features are available - the audio quality is set by the codec, and above all by the speaker itself.
This is the most misread number on a Bluetooth speaker box, so it’s worth being precise about what it does and doesn’t buy you.
Does Bluetooth Version Affect Sound Quality?
Not directly. Bluetooth 5.0 and 5.3 can carry exactly the same audio stream at exactly the same quality. What changes between versions is the plumbing: range, power efficiency, how well the connection holds in a crowded radio environment, and which optional features the chipset can support.

What Bluetooth Versions Do Speakers Actually Use?
Across the 304 ranked speakers publishing a version:
- 5.0 - 91 speakers. Still the most common by a clear margin.
- 5.3 - 68
- 4.2 - 41
- 5.4 - 25
- 5.2 - 23
- 5.1 - 22
- 4.1 - 14, 4.0 - 13
- 6.0 - 5. The leading edge, and rare.
- 3.0 and 2.1 - 1 each. Both on old models.
The spread matters when shopping used, where a 4.x speaker is common - see discontinued speakers still worth buying.
What Changed In Each Version?
4.0 to 4.2 - introduced Bluetooth Low Energy and improved speed and privacy. Fine for audio; these are simply older.
5.0 - roughly double the bandwidth and up to four times the range of 4.2. The practical gain on a speaker is a more stable connection across a house.
5.1 - direction finding, which matters for tracking devices rather than speakers.
5.2 - added LE Audio and the LC3 codec, the foundation everything below is built on.
5.3 - efficiency and interference improvements, better battery behaviour.
5.4 and 6.0 - further refinement, plus broader Auracast support.
Do I Need Bluetooth 5.2 Or Later For Auracast?
Effectively yes. Auracast is built on LE Audio, which arrived with 5.2, so a 5.0 speaker will not gain it. That matters if you plan to pair speakers later, because Auracast is the first pairing system with a real chance of working across brands - all the others are locked to one manufacturer. What Should I Prioritise Instead?
Version is worth a tiebreak, nothing more. In descending order of what actually changes your listening: the speaker’s size class, its tuning, whether it has a usable EQ, then codec support, then version.
