This is the brand page where the ranking and the sales charts disagree most. Sony sells enormous numbers of Bluetooth speakers and its best placement here is #13 in the party class. Nothing from Sony reaches the top ten of the medium portable ranking, which is the largest and most competitive category on the site. That is not a grudge, it is what the measurements say, and the specific complaints recur: midrange dips, upper-midrange and treble peaks, and a hollow character noted across the ULT and XB lines.

The ULT and EXTRA BASS tuning is the reason. Sony’s bass-boost modes do exactly what they advertise, and for background listening outdoors or at a party the effect is genuinely enjoyable. It also comes at the cost of the midrange, which is where voices live. If that trade appeals to you, it is a legitimate preference (see best bass), just buy it knowing that is what you are buying.

Where Sony is competitive. The party-size models hold their own on output, and the SA-CS9 subwoofer is a reasonable budget option. Build quality, water resistance and battery life are consistently good across the line, and Sony supports its products for longer than most of the value brands here.

Cons: Sounds a bit hollow, a bit boosted in the treble. Custom EQ and the ULT bass-boost button can’t be used together - turning on ULT disables the EQ. Bass is very weak with ULT off. Lost to the JBL Charge 6 in a side-by-side comparison despite being the larger speaker.

Pros: Affordable entry-level floorstanding tower offering solid sensitivity (88.6dB SPL at 2.83V/1m), making it easy to power with standard budget AVRs. Harmonic distortion remains reasonably low at moderate listening levels (86dB SPL) when high-pass filtered above 80-100Hz with a dedicated subwoofer. Front-ported design allows relatively close placement to front boundaries without excessive port occlusion. Measured bass extension of 72Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 88.6dB.

Cons: Severe cabinet and driver resonances plague the passband between 100Hz and 600Hz, imparting audible coloration and chesty resonances to male vocals and acoustic instruments. Irregular frequency response peaks and dips make automated receiver room correction difficult to equalize effectively. Poor low-frequency extension (F3 of 72Hz, F10 of 39Hz) for a floorstander, combined with rapid distortion escalation below 80Hz at higher SPLs (96dB+). Supertweeter driver adds crossover complexity without providing audible high-frequency benefit within the human hearing spectrum. Discontinued.
