CEA-2010-A Explained - How Subwoofers Are Measured

CEA-2010-A is the reason our subwoofer rankings are ordered the way they are. It’s a standardized test of how loud a subwoofer plays each bass frequency before distortion becomes audible - and unlike almost every other spec in audio, manufacturers can’t quietly redefine it. All 285 subwoofers ranked here have published CEA-2010-A measurements.

What The Test Does

The subwoofer is fed a short burst at a specific frequency, and the level is raised until distortion crosses a defined threshold. The output at that point is recorded. Repeat per frequency.

Two things make it trustworthy:

It’s a burst, not a tone. A continuous sine wave would heat and compress the driver, measuring thermal endurance rather than output. A burst measures what the sub does on a movie effect or a bass note.

The distortion limit is defined. “How loud can it play” is meaningless without “before sounding bad”. CEA-2010-A fixes that threshold, so two subwoofers measured this way are genuinely comparable.

Reading The Numbers In Our Rankings

Each subwoofer entry carries output at 20, 25, 31.5, 40, 50, 63, 80 Hz and often higher, plus a CEA-2010-A Average (40-80 Hz) which is what orders the rankings.

The average is a summary, and it hides the thing that matters most for movies. The band it covers, 40-80 Hz, is upper bass. Deep movie effects live an octave lower. A ported subwoofer can post a strong average and still fall apart at 20 Hz.

So: use the average to compare subwoofers generally, and the 20-25 Hz figures to compare them for home theater. That’s exactly why best subwoofers for home theater is ranked on 20 Hz output rather than the average, and why it reorders things substantially.

What It Doesn’t Tell You

Nothing about quality below the distortion threshold. Two subs with identical CEA-2010-A figures can differ in group delay, port noise and how they integrate with a room. Sealed and ported designs measuring the same will not sound the same - see sealed versus ported.

Nothing about your room. Room gain, modes and placement change in-room response more than the difference between two well-measuring subwoofers. This is why two modest subs beat one large one, an argument made in full in the subwoofer buyer’s guide.

It’s an anechoic or ground-plane measurement. Your room will add substantial output down low, especially if it’s small.
