JBL Go 5 vs Sony SRS-XB100

Short answer: the JBL Go 5, unless battery life matters more than sound to you. It ranks #24 of 47 small speakers against the Sony SRS-XB100’s #33, and it costs $23.05 less at $39.95 versus $63.

The Go 5’s edge is real but so is its weak spot. It adds AirTouch tap-to-pair stereo linking, a 7-band custom EQ, and a USB-C wired audio input that the XB100 lacks entirely. The catch is battery: the Go 5 is rated for 8 hours (10 with Playtime Boost) while the XB100 is rated for 16 hours and tested out to roughly 17 in real-world use. If you need a speaker that lasts all day away from an outlet, that gap matters more than the rank difference.

Neither speaker is a bass performer. The Go 5’s cons note it is still lacking bass and not very clear overall, with weak off-axis dispersion and an uneven, upper-mid-heavy tonal balance; it also falls short of similarly priced rivals like the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2. The XB100 fares similarly: its own notes call out not much bass and describe it as pretty much the same as the cheaper Sony SRS-XB13. Neither is the pick if low end is your priority.

What the Go 5 adds that the XB100 does not:

• IP68 rating versus the XB100’s IP67, a small but real step up in dust and water resistance.
• Stereo pairing via AirTouch, tap-to-pair rather than app-based setup.
• A companion app with EQ, letting you tune the sound; the XB100 has no app at all.

What the XB100 adds: a built-in microphone for calls, and the ability to stereo-pair two units together, both missing from the Go 5.

Buy the JBL Go 5 if you want the better-ranked speaker for less money and can live with shorter runtime between charges.

Buy the Sony SRS-XB100 if all-day battery life and a built-in microphone matter more to you than the extra dollar or two of value the Go 5 offers.

Cons: Still overpriced for what it delivers, not very different from the Go 4 besides the lights. Still lacking bass and not very clear overall. Mono downmixing produces an audible growling artifact, the same issue noted on the JBL Charge 6. Falls well short of similarly priced rivals like the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2. Weak off-axis dispersion and an uneven, upper-mid-heavy tonal balance. Doesn’t get meaningfully louder at max volume, just harsher.

Sony SRS-XB100: $63.00 Amazon eBay

Pros: Long real-world battery life (~17 hours in testing). IP67 rated and pocketable at 267g, with a clip for bags/gear. Can stereo-pair two units.

Cons: Not much bass. Seems pretty much the same as the XB13, maybe a teeny bit deeper bass and a little less muddy.
