Bluetooth Latency Explained - Why Audio Lags Behind Video

Bluetooth latency is the delay between your device sending audio and the speaker playing it. Below about 100 ms most people won’t notice it on video; above roughly 150 ms lip-sync is visibly wrong. Measured figures on the speakers ranked here run from 60 ms to 180 ms.

Music doesn’t care about latency at all. Video, games and any live use do.

How Much Bluetooth Latency Is Too Much?

Rough thresholds:

Measured examples from the 66 ranked speakers publishing a figure: Minirig mk4 at 60 ms, Soundcore Flare 2 at 80 ms, Brane X at 100 ms, JBL Charge 5 at 125 ms, Tribit Stormbox at 166 ms, Tribit Stormbox Micro at 180 ms. That’s a threefold spread across ordinary consumer speakers.

Why Does Bluetooth Audio Lag Behind Video?

The delay is the sum of several stages, and none of them are avoidable in a wireless link:

  1. Encoding on your phone into the chosen codec.
  2. Transmission, including retries when the radio environment is busy.
  3. Buffering at the speaker - deliberately added, because a buffer is what prevents dropouts. This is usually the largest share.
  4. Decoding and DSP, including whatever processing the speaker applies.

The buffer is the key trade: a bigger one means a more robust connection and more lag. That’s why “low latency mode” usually means “smaller buffer, more risk of stutter”.

How Do I Reduce Bluetooth Audio Delay?

Use the speaker’s low-latency mode if it has one. Note the catch on some models - the EarFun UBoom L drops from 400 ms to 66 ms in low-latency mode, but the mode doesn’t work while two speakers are TWS paired. If you watch video on a stereo pair, check this before buying.

Use a wire. An aux cable removes the wireless stages entirely - though not always all the delay, since 33 ranked speakers publish a separate aux latency figure and some still process the analog signal. See best speakers with aux input.

Use the TV’s own sync offset. Most televisions have an audio delay setting that can compensate for a fixed lag.

Prefer a lower-latency codec where both ends support it. aptX and aptX Adaptive target this specifically - though as Bluetooth codecs explained sets out, only 30 speakers here support aptX at all.
