The one thing to know: none of these systems talk to each other. If you buy a speaker now and a second one later, that decision is being made today, not later. This page explains the systems and the trap.
TWS Versus Party Mode
Two different features get confused constantly.
TWS (True Wireless Stereo) pairs exactly two identical speakers into a left/right stereo pair. Both must usually be the same model. This is the one that genuinely improves sound - stereo imaging is a real upgrade, and two mid-priced speakers often beat one expensive one.
Party mode links many speakers playing the same mono signal, for covering a large space. It does not create stereo and does not improve sound quality; it makes the sound bigger and louder.
The Systems, And How Many Speakers Use Each
Counted across the speakers ranked here that publish the field:
- Auracast - the industry standard, part of Bluetooth LE Audio rather than owned by one brand. 24 speakers.
- PartyConnect - Sony. 10 speakers.
- PartyCast and PartyCast 2.0 - Soundcore. 11 speakers.
- PartyBoost - JBL’s middle generation. 8 speakers.
- Bose Party Mode - Bose only. 8 speakers.
- PartyChain - Tribit and others. 5 speakers.
- Connect+ - JBL’s older generation. 5 speakers.
- Marshall Stack - Marshall. 5 speakers.
- PartyAdd - Mifa and others. 4 speakers.
- Dual Sound - Harman Kardon, pairs two only. 3 speakers.
183 speakers have no multi-speaker mode at all, which is worth knowing before you assume it’s a standard feature.
The Trap, Stated Plainly
Eleven systems, zero interoperability. A Soundcore on PartyCast will not join a JBL on Auracast. A Bose will not join anything but a Bose.
It’s worse inside JBL than between brands. JBL has shipped three generations - Connect+, then PartyBoost, then Auracast - and they do not talk to each other. A JBL Charge 5 (PartyBoost) will not pair with a JBL Charge 6 (Auracast), despite being consecutive models of the same speaker. Does Auracast Fix This?
Partly, and eventually. Auracast is part of the Bluetooth LE Audio standard rather than one manufacturer’s protocol, so speakers from different brands can in principle broadcast and receive together. It is the first of these systems with a real chance of becoming universal, and it is why 24 speakers here already list it - more than any single proprietary system.
Two caveats. Implementations still vary, so cross-brand Auracast is not guaranteed to work as smoothly as same-brand. And it doesn’t help you at all if the speaker you already own predates it.
Practical Advice
Buying one speaker and might add another? Buy into Auracast, or accept that the second one will need to be the same brand and generation.
Want genuinely better sound rather than more of it? Buy two of the same speaker and use TWS. Stereo is an upgrade; party mode is amplification.
