Short version: on a Bluetooth speaker, the codec is almost never your limiting factor. The speaker’s tuning, its drivers and your room all matter more, by a wide margin. This page explains what codecs do and why the marketing around them is aimed at headphone buyers.
What A Codec Actually Is
Bluetooth doesn’t have the bandwidth to carry a raw audio stream, so the audio is compressed on your phone, sent, and decompressed by the speaker. The codec is the compression scheme both ends agree on. They negotiate automatically and pick the best one both support.
The Ones You’ll See
SBC is the mandatory baseline. Every Bluetooth audio device supports it, and its reputation is worse than it deserves - modern SBC at a high bitrate is genuinely fine. Of the speakers ranked here that publish codec support, 325 support SBC, which is to say effectively all of them.
AAC is Apple’s preferred codec and the one iPhones use. Slightly more efficient than SBC at the same bitrate. 71 speakers here support it.
aptX is Qualcomm’s, and needs support on both ends - most iPhones don’t have it. 30 speakers here. aptX HD (4 speakers) and aptX Adaptive (7) raise the ceiling further; aptX Lossless exists on exactly one speaker in this store.
LDAC is Sony’s high-bitrate codec, up to 990 kbps. 23 speakers here support it.
LC3 is the new Bluetooth LE Audio codec, more efficient than SBC at low bitrates and the foundation Auracast is built on. Only 2 speakers here list it today, though that will change.
Why This Matters Less Than You Think
The numbers above are the point. In headphones, LDAC and aptX Adaptive are common enough that codec choice is a real decision. In Bluetooth speakers, 325 of 338 support SBC and most support nothing else. If you are choosing between two speakers, codec support will rarely be the deciding factor because usually neither has anything beyond SBC and AAC.
The speaker is the bottleneck, not the link. A 3” driver in a plastic box rolling off at 60 Hz is not being held back by SBC. Codec differences are audible on good headphones in quiet conditions; they are swamped by the tuning differences between speakers that our rankings measure.
Both ends have to agree. An LDAC speaker fed by an iPhone falls back to AAC. Check what your phone actually supports before paying for a codec.
When It Does Matter
- You have an Android phone with LDAC and listen critically indoors at moderate volume on a genuinely good speaker. The audiophile picks are where this is worth considering.
- You want the lowest latency for video. This is a real problem - several speakers here have 200-400 ms of lag. Low-latency modes and aptX help; a wired aux input helps more.

What To Do Instead
