DSP On Powered Speakers Explained

DSP (digital signal processing) is onboard computing that actively reshapes a speaker’s output in real time, rather than a fixed analog crossover or a simple bass/treble knob. Of the 27 ranked speakers where we’ve checked, only 9 actually have it, and every one of them is a serious powered speaker.

Having an amplifier and having DSP are not the same thing. Most powered speakers do the first without the second.

What Does DSP Actually Let A Speaker Do?

Room correction. B&O’s Beolab20 adapts its output for free-standing, wall, or corner placement; KEF’s LS60 does the same across normal and expert modes. Neither is possible with a fixed analog crossover, which can’t change its behavior once it’s built.

DSP Isn’t A Requirement For A Speaker To Sound Good

Plenty of highly-ranked speakers here have no DSP at all and never needed it: a well-executed analog crossover and a well-chosen driver set can measure flat without any real-time correction running. DSP is a tool for reaching a target response electronically, not a guarantee that a speaker sounds better than one without it. What DSP does buy is flexibility a fixed design can’t match: adapting to a corner instead of open space, or running a genuinely deep parametric EQ instead of a handful of fixed bands.

Where Does DSP Show Up?

Every speaker with DSP in this data is a premium powered speaker: nearfield and midfield studio monitors from Neumann, Genelec, and HEDD, and DSP-driven “smart” home speakers like the B&O Beolab20 and KEF LS60. It isn’t a feature portable Bluetooth speakers or budget powered speakers carry.
