Looking for the best subwoofer? Most subwoofer buyers are building a home theater, and movie LFE is a different job from music bass: the content runs down to 20 Hz and below, it arrives in sustained high-level bursts, and it needs headroom you’ll rarely use but always hear when it’s missing. These picks are ranked on measured output at 20-25 Hz, not on the CEA-2010-A 40-80 Hz average that orders the main rankings.

Every subwoofer on this site has published CEA-2010-A burst measurements at each frequency, which is what makes this ranking possible. Manufacturer frequency-response claims are close to useless here, since “20 Hz” in a spec sheet says nothing about how loud a sub plays 20 Hz before it distorts.

What Actually Matters For Movies

Output at 20-25 Hz, not 40 Hz. Most subwoofers that measure well in the 40-80 Hz band fall apart an octave lower. The picks below are chosen specifically on deep output, so some rank lower in the main lists than subs that don’t appear here at all.

Headroom, not loudness. A sub running near its limit compresses and distorts on the loudest scenes, which is exactly when you notice. Buying more output than you think you need is the single most reliable upgrade in home theater bass.

Two smaller subs beat one big one. This is the most under-used advice in the hobby. Two subs in different positions average out room modes, which flattens the response across every seat rather than just one. If you’re choosing between one $1500 sub and two $750 subs, take the pair almost every time.

Ported usually wins here. For the same money a port buys 3-6 dB in the band movies use. See best ported subwoofers for that argument in full.

Reference Home Theater

The deepest measured output of any subwoofer on this site, and the pick if the budget genuinely has no ceiling, is the JTR Speakers Captivator 4000ULF: $5,699 each JTR Speakers eBay

JTR Speakers Captivator 4000ULF ranking card

Pros: Independent CEA-2010 testing records 122.3 dB at 20 Hz and 130.8 dB through 40-80 Hz. The ported, front enclosure with 2x 18” (457mm) driver has the headroom for demanding film bass in a large room.

Cons: The 1041.4H x 520.7W x 1003.3D mm cabinet and 120.2 kg mass make this a serious placement and moving commitment. Ported output does not solve room modes, so careful placement and calibration remain essential.
