Step 1: Battery Or Mains

Mains-powered, two-way PA tops are the reference point this category is built around: full output with no runtime limit, at the lowest cost per watt. Buy mains when there’s an outlet within reach and continuous, undiminished output matters more than moving the box without a cable.

Step 2: Pick The Driver Size

Bigger isn’t automatically better here. Match the box to the room, not the number on the woofer.

Woofer diameter alone doesn’t determine sound quality or coverage. A well-designed 10-inch can out-perform a poorly crossed-over 15-inch on directivity and clarity; compare measured output, coverage pattern and weight rather than assuming bigger always wins.

Step 3: Make Sure You Need A PA, Not A Party Speaker

A PA and a battery party speaker overlap visually, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category.

A party speaker is the right call for recorded music with no microphone: Bluetooth, an app, lighting, and deeper bass from one enclosure than most PA tops manage alone.

A PA is the right call the moment a live microphone, an instrument, or more than one sound source enters the picture. XLR inputs, a built-in mixer or preamp, stand mounting, and predictable coverage across a room matter more than app convenience.

Mistakes That Cost People Money

Buying on published max SPL alone. Manufacturer output figures aren’t measured consistently across brands, and a number without a stated test method is close to useless for comparing two speakers.

Choosing driver size before checking the room. A 15-inch top in a small room is often harder to manage than a well-placed 10-inch, and a subwoofer usually solves a bass shortfall more cheaply than jumping a size class.

Buying a party speaker for a live microphone. Party speakers aren’t built around a mic preamp or feedback-resistant gain structure the way a PA is; the money saved shows up as a fighting-feedback gig.
