6 amps and DACs made our rankings with a built-in battery, so they run without draining a phone and can travel. Battery life is listed on each card. Every one is rated from its SINAD as measured by Audio Science Review plus its rated output power, so a higher rating means a cleaner, more capable unit rather than a longer feature list.
This is every match, grouped by type and sorted by rating.

DAC and Headphone Amp Combos
Ranked #7 of 43 in DAC and Headphone Amp Combos - Topping G5: $299.00 Amazon eBay
Pros: Audio Science Review measured a SINAD of 120 dB, so its noise and distortion are inaudible. A rated 1,200 mW into 32 ohms is unusual for a battery unit and handles most planars, with 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm balanced outputs. It runs about 9 hours on USB, 10 on Bluetooth with LDAC and aptX Adaptive, and 25 as an analog amp, and weighs 265 g.
Cons: Its 175 mW into 300 ohms limits headroom with high-impedance headphones. The Topping DX1 II rates the same and measures slightly cleaner for much less, though it is not portable. At 140 mm long and 18 mm thick, it suits a bag better than a pocket.

Ranked #17 of 43 in DAC and Headphone Amp Combos - Chord Hugo 2: $2,595.00 Headphones.com eBay
Pros: Audio Science Review measured 112 dB SINAD, clean for nearly all listening, and Chord rates it at 740 mW into 32 ohms, enough for most planar magnetic headphones. It is a battery powered portable unit with about 6 hours of play, Bluetooth with aptX, and optical, coaxial and USB inputs. RCA outputs let it double as a home DAC.
Cons: It costs far more than the SMSL DS20, which rates the same and measured higher SINAD. There is no balanced headphone output, the USB port is the older micro USB type, and battery life is short at about 6 hours.

Ranked #27 of 43 in DAC and Headphone Amp Combos - Woo Audio WA11 Topaz: $1,099 Headphones.com eBay
Pros: It is a portable DAC and headphone amp with a 6 hour battery, USB-C and 4.4 mm balanced analog inputs, and 6.35 mm and 4.4 mm balanced headphone outputs. Woo Audio rates it at 1,200 mW into 30 ohms balanced, enough for most planar magnetic headphones, and Audio Science Review measured a SINAD of 101 dB, clean for nearly all listening.
Cons: The Khadas Tone2 Pro rates higher and measured cleaner in Audio Science Review’s tests for a small fraction of the price. Battery life is short at 6 hours, and the 1,200 mW figure applies to the balanced output.

Ranked #32 of 43 in DAC and Headphone Amp Combos - Qudelix T71: $229.00 Qudelix eBay
Pros: Audio Science Review measured 110 dB SINAD, clean enough for nearly all listening. A built in 20 band parametric or graphic equalizer lets you tune your headphones, and it offers 3.5 mm plus 2.5 mm and 4.4 mm balanced outputs. Its battery runs 4 to 10 hours, and it weighs 75 g.
Cons: The maker does not publish a 32 ohm power figure, so it is hard to judge how well it drives demanding headphones. USB-C is the only input. The Loxjie D30 rates higher and measured cleaner for less.

Ranked #40 of 43 in DAC and Headphone Amp Combos - Leckerton Audio UHA-6S.MKII: $239 Leckerton Audio eBay
Pros: It is a portable battery powered DAC and amp with micro USB, optical, coaxial and 3.5 mm analog inputs, lasting 10 hours from digital sources and 30 hours in analog mode. Audio Science Review measured a SINAD of 94 dB, fine for most headphones.
Cons: It is rated for only 55 mW into 32 ohms with its stock op amp, which suits in-ear monitors and easy headphones only, and sensitive in-ears may reveal hiss at 94 dB SINAD. It has no balanced output and still uses micro USB. The Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital rates higher and measures cleaner, though it costs more.

Headphone Amplifiers
Ranked #19 of 19 in Headphone Amplifiers - Donner EM1: $39.99 Amazon eBay
Pros: It is a compact, inexpensive battery powered amp rated for about 12 hours per charge. Its XLR and 6.35 mm TRS combo input accepts a feed from a mixer or interface, and a rated 125 mW into 32 ohms is enough to drive most headphones.
Cons: Audio Science Review measured a SINAD of only 68 dB, a level where noise and distortion become a real audible weakness, especially with sensitive in-ears. There is only a single 3.5 mm output with no balanced option. The Topping A50 III costs more but rates far higher and measured transparent at 121 dB.
