Every Marshall Speaker Ranked

This page lists all 16 Marshall speakers ranked on this site, split between portable Bluetooth models and powered tabletop speakers, each showing where it places in its category.

Marshall is a styling brand, and the rankings say so plainly. The best placement anywhere in the range is #11, in both the large and small portable classes. Nothing reaches a top ten. The recurring measured complaints are consistent across a decade of products: modest bass extension, peaky upper mids, and low maximum output relative to price. The Woburn III is described in our notes as hollow-sounding with peaky upper mids; the Middleton II has boosted bass that drowns the midrange, a dip at 200 Hz and a peak at 1 kHz.

That is not the same as saying don’t buy one. The gold-piping-and-script-logo look is genuinely well executed, the build quality is good, the controls are tactile in a way almost nothing else in this market bothers with, and the products age well physically. If you want an object that looks right on a shelf and sounds decent, that is a legitimate purchase and the portable buyer’s guide makes the case that styling is a real requirement rather than a frivolous one. Just buy it knowing what the measurement gap is, rather than believing the price implies performance.

One quirk worth flagging. Several Marshall portables apply DSP reverb to widen the sound. It is noted in the Stockwell 2’s cons and some listeners find it irritating once heard. It cannot be turned off on the models that have it.

If the look matters most but you want better sound, the closest alternatives at each size and price are in the portable buyer’s guide and the powered speaker buyer’s guide.

Pros: 30 hour battery life - among the best in its class; a 20 min quick-charge gives 4 hours. IP67 rated, durable rubbery build using 50% recycled plastic.

Cons: Strange unnatural echo-like sound coloration, bass not as deep as competitors. Not technically a 360 speaker, only front and rear. Not very loud. Not really any different from the Emberton II except having the treble turned down a little bit.

Marshall Middleton ranking card

Pros: Very deep bass for the size/weight.

Cons: 5db dip at 1.7khz and 6.3khz. 9khz treble peak. Not a very smooth frequency response. A lot of Marshall’s added dsp echo which cannot be turned off, very distracting and annoying. It’s like forcing you to listen to your music in an echo chamber. Bass is reasonably deep but artificial sounding and flabby, with no attack and no dynamics. Treble is rolled off.
