Short answer: the Edifier S1000W. It ranks #80 of 105 powered bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.3/5, at $499.99; the Audioengine HD5 ranks #90, rated 3.2/5, and costs $599, which makes this an easy call rather than a real tradeoff.
Why pick the Edifier S1000W: Network playback and multiple digital and analog connections make it a convenient all-in-one music system. The catch: High-resolution input support does not itself improve acoustic accuracy.
What the Audioengine HD5 does well: The largest model in the HD line above the Audioengine HD4: a 5” aramid woofer and 0.75” silk dome tweeter per side with 50W RMS per channel. Watch for: No independent measurements yet, so its tonal balance and directivity can’t be compared with ranked speakers.
Buy the Edifier S1000W. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Audioengine HD5 and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.
About the ratings: the Audioengine HD5’s rating is estimated from measured siblings and predecessors rather than its own measurements, with a likely range of 2.9 to 3.5, so this verdict could change once it is measured.

Edifier S1000W: $499.99 per pair Amazon eBay
Pros: Network playback and multiple digital and analog connections make it a convenient all-in-one music system. Support for high-resolution input is useful for compatibility with different sources.
Cons: High-resolution input support does not itself improve acoustic accuracy. The all-in-one format offers less component flexibility than separate speakers and amplification. No independent measurements exist; reviews are limited to informal listening comparisons.

Audioengine HD5: $599.00 per pair Estimated Amazon eBay
Same family: the Audioengine HD3 (smaller bookshelf, rated 3.2/5), the Audioengine HD4 (smaller bookshelf, ranked higher, rated 3.2/5) and the Audioengine HD6 (smaller bookshelf, ranked higher, rated 3.3/5).
Pros: The largest model in the HD line above the Audioengine HD4: a 5” aramid woofer and 0.75” silk dome tweeter per side with 50W RMS per channel. Bluetooth with aptX HD, optical, RCA and 3.5mm inputs plus a variable line output for a subwoofer, with a remote.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so its tonal balance and directivity can’t be compared with ranked speakers. Rated only to 50Hz, so deep bass needs a subwoofer, and its measured siblings the Audioengine HD4 and Audioengine HD6 sit in the middle of the powered rankings.
