Kali Audio IN-UNF vs Audioengine HD5

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Short answer: the Kali Audio IN-UNF. It ranks #82 of 105 powered bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.3/5, at $699. The Audioengine HD5 ranks #90, rated 3.2/5, at $599, $100 cheaper, a saving that is not big enough to make up the sound-quality gap.

Kali Audio IN-UNF vs Audioengine HD5

Why pick the Kali Audio IN-UNF: A specialized ultra-nearfield system with coaxial satellites and an opposed-woofer bass module designed to sit on the desk. Watch for: The intended desk geometry is part of the acoustic design.

What the Audioengine HD5 does well: The largest model in the HD line above the Audioengine HD4: a 5” aramid woofer and 0.75” silk dome tweeter per side with 50W RMS per channel. Watch for: No independent measurements yet, so its tonal balance and directivity can’t be compared with ranked speakers.

Buy the Kali Audio IN-UNF. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $100 saving on the Audioengine HD5 is not enough to make up the difference.

About the ratings: the Audioengine HD5’s rating is estimated from measured siblings and predecessors rather than its own measurements, with a likely range of 2.9 to 3.5, so this verdict could change once it is measured.

Same family: the Kali Audio IN-5 (smaller bookshelf, ranked higher, rated 4.2/5) and the Kali Audio IN-8 V2 (smaller bookshelf, rated 4.4/5).

Pros: A specialized ultra-nearfield system with coaxial satellites and an opposed-woofer bass module designed to sit on the desk. Erin found it worked much better when positioned using Kali’s placement template, with useful agreement between the intended response and close-range moving-microphone measurements. DSP placement controls and varied inputs make it a thoughtful solution for the right desk.

Cons: The intended desk geometry is part of the acoustic design. The bass module and prescribed spacing occupy considerable desk space and may conflict with large monitors. It is not designed for arbitrary room placement.

Same family: the Audioengine HD3 (smaller bookshelf, rated 3.2/5), the Audioengine HD4 (smaller bookshelf, ranked higher, rated 3.2/5) and the Audioengine HD6 (smaller bookshelf, ranked higher, rated 3.3/5).

Pros: The largest model in the HD line above the Audioengine HD4: a 5” aramid woofer and 0.75” silk dome tweeter per side with 50W RMS per channel. Bluetooth with aptX HD, optical, RCA and 3.5mm inputs plus a variable line output for a subwoofer, with a remote.

Cons: No independent measurements yet, so its tonal balance and directivity can’t be compared with ranked speakers. Rated only to 50Hz, so deep bass needs a subwoofer, and its measured siblings the Audioengine HD4 and Audioengine HD6 sit in the middle of the powered rankings.
