Short answer: both are discontinued, so this only matters if you are buying used. Used, the Sony XB33 is the better pick: it ranks #77 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality (rated 3.4/5), against #91 (rated 3.2/5) for the JBL Charge 3. If you want one new, the JBL Charge 6 replaces the JBL Charge 3 and is rated 4.2/5 at $119.95.

The Sony XB33 is the deeper-bass choice. IP67 rated and lightweight (2.4 lb). Its bass reaches about 50Hz before falling 10dB, against 63Hz for the JBL Charge 3. It supports LDAC Bluetooth, which the JBL Charge 3 lacks. It has an adjustable EQ, which the JBL Charge 3 lacks. Watch for: Not very loud.
The JBL Charge 3 is the louder, lighter choice. Doubles as a 6000mAh power bank for USB devices. ~20 hour battery life. Alan Ross Reviews measured it at 100dB at full volume, against 97dB for the Sony XB33. At 1.8 lbs (800 g) it weighs noticeably less than the Sony XB33 at 2.4 lbs (1.1 kg). It keeps a wired aux input, which the Sony XB33 lacks. Watch for: Less clarity than the JBL Flip 4.
Buy the Sony XB33 only if you find one used in good condition; both are discontinued, and it is the better rated of the two. For a new speaker, buy the JBL Charge 6, which replaces the JBL Charge 3.
