Short answer: the Gustard A20H. It ranks #25 of 43 DAC and headphone amp combos by measured performance, rated 4.2/5, at $752. The Luxsin X8 ranks #30, rated 4.0/5, at $699, $53 cheaper, which does not close the gap in measured performance.
Why pick the Gustard A20H: A rated 2.4 W balanced into 32 ohms and 264 mW into 300 ohms is enough for planar magnetic and high impedance headphones alike. The tradeoff: Its 103 dB SINAD trails many cheaper rivals, and the Tanchjim Luna rates higher with cleaner measurements for a small fraction of the price.
What the Luxsin X8 does well: Audio Science Review measured 120 dB SINAD, so its noise and distortion are transparent. The catch: The maker doesn’t publish a 32 ohm power figure, so its headroom for demanding headphones is unknown.
Buy the Gustard A20H. It is rated higher, and the $53 saving on the Luxsin X8 is not enough to make up the difference.
