Different classes, so treat this as a step-up-or-not question rather than a head-to-head. The KEF R3 ranks #15 of 214 bookshelf speakers by sound quality at $1,545.56; the KEF R2c ranks #35 of 131 center channel speakers by sound quality at $1,299.99.

The KEF R3 is the more accurate, deeper-bass choice. True three-way stand-mount with a 6.5-inch woofer below KEF’s 5-inch Uni-Q midrange/1-inch tweeter. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 6.20 against 4.37 for the KEF R2c. Its bass reaches about 58Hz before falling 3dB, against 79.8Hz for the KEF R2c. Watch for: The low-frequency alignment rolls gradually rather than delivering high-output sub-bass; KEF specifies 58Hz +/-3dB and Erin’s high-level data supports using an 80Hz subwoofer crossover.
What the KEF R2c does well: A sealed three-way center with KEF’s Uni-Q coaxial driver (1” aluminum tweeter inside a 5” midrange) between two 5.25” woofers. Watch for: Bass rolls off at 79.8Hz (-3dB) and about 54Hz (-10dB), and the listening window spans 3.4dB from 300Hz to 5kHz.
Worth knowing: the KEF R2c is discontinued, though it still ranks #35 of 131 center channel speakers by sound quality, so a used unit beats most of what is still sold new. The KEF R2c’s replacement, the KEF R2 Meta, is still sold new.
Buy the KEF R3 ($1,545.56) for a bookshelf speaker; the KEF R2c ($1,299.99) suits a center channel speaker instead.

Frequency Response Compared
Both speakers’ spinorama measurements, overlaid. A flatter line is more neutral: peaks sound forward or harsh, dips sound recessed. Each curve is shifted so its average from 300 Hz to 3 kHz sits at 0 dB, so loudness differences between the two are removed and only the shape is compared. The two were measured by different sources, so small differences, especially in the bass, can come from the measurement setup rather than the speakers.

KEF R3: $1,545.56 per pair Amazon eBay
Newer model: the KEF R3 Meta, ranked higher, rated 4.6/5, released Mar 2023. See every KEF R Series generation.
Same family: the KEF R5 (smallest floorstanding, rated 4.4/5), the KEF R7 (floorstanding, estimated 4.2/5), the KEF R11 (largest floorstanding, estimated 4.3/5) and the KEF R2c (center, rated 4/5).
Pros: True three-way stand-mount with a 6.5-inch woofer below KEF’s 5-inch Uni-Q midrange/1-inch tweeter. Erin measured approximately 86-87dB/2.83V/1m sensitivity, exceptionally low sub-1% distortion at 86dB and orderly directivity in both planes. The coaxial geometry maintains image stability across seats, while Flexible Port Technology avoids the strong midrange port resonance common to rear-vented competitors. A 110W Parasound drove it successfully in Erin’s listening. Measured bass extension of 35.2Hz (-10dB), with a measured sensitivity of 87dB.
Cons: The low-frequency alignment rolls gradually rather than delivering high-output sub-bass; KEF specifies 58Hz +/-3dB and Erin’s high-level data supports using an 80Hz subwoofer crossover. Narrow high-frequency features and natural Uni-Q narrowing toward the top octave make toe angle audible, although off-axis tracking remains smooth. Sensitivity is moderate, the cabinet weighs almost 30 lb, and this original R3 lacks the Meta successor’s MAT absorber.

Newer model: the KEF R2 Meta, ranked higher, rated 4.3/5, released Feb 2023. See every KEF R Series generation.

Pros: A sealed three-way center with KEF’s Uni-Q coaxial driver (1” aluminum tweeter inside a 5” midrange) between two 5.25” woofers. Preference score 4.37, rising to 7.22 with an ideal subwoofer. Measured bass extension of 79.8Hz (-3dB).
Cons: Bass rolls off at 79.8Hz (-3dB) and about 54Hz (-10dB), and the listening window spans 3.4dB from 300Hz to 5kHz. KEF replaced it with the KEF R2 Meta. Discontinued.
