Turtlebox vs EarFun Uboom X

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Short answer: both are discontinued, so this only matters if you are buying used. Used, the EarFun Uboom X is the better pick: it ranks #1 of 91 boombox speakers by sound quality (rated 4.7/5), against #87 (rated 2.1/5) for the Turtlebox. If you want one new, the Turtlebox Gen 3 replaces the Turtlebox and is rated 2.1/5 at $430.

Turtlebox vs EarFun Uboom X

Why pick the Turtlebox: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. The catch: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.

The EarFun Uboom X is the better-sounding, deeper-bass option. Tuned by Oluv and he knocked it out of the park again. Its bass reaches about 38Hz before falling 10dB, against 65Hz for the Turtlebox. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Turtlebox lacks. It links with other speakers (Party Connect mode, up to 50 speakers), which the Turtlebox cannot. The tradeoff: The out of the box 0.33 firmware and EQ sounds horrible.

Buy the EarFun Uboom X only if you find one used in good condition; both are discontinued, and it is the better rated of the two. For a new speaker, buy the Turtlebox Gen 3, which replaces the Turtlebox.

Turtlebox ranking card

Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5, released Feb 2025. See every Turtlebox generation.

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Turtlebox Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.

EarFun Uboom X: $159.99 Discontinued eBay

EarFun Uboom X ranking card

Pros: Tuned by Oluv and he knocked it out of the park again. Deeper bass than the Tribit Stormbox Blast. Extremely neutral, possibly the best of any modern Bluetooth speaker slightly behind the Vifa Helsinki. This is the only speaker that sounds correct at every single volume level due to Oluv’s individual EQ settings at each volume level. Other speakers will need a different EQ at each volume level. Amazing sounding at low levels as it boosts bass and treble at low levels to account for the equal-loudness contour. Just considering the midrange and treble, this speaker is better sounding than the EarFun Uboom L. Measured bass extension of ~38Hz (-10dB).

Cons: The out of the box 0.33 firmware and EQ sounds horrible. Some users have reported sound interruption issues when running two in TWS, though not on every source device, and disabling AAC resolves it where it occurs. Discontinued.

Setup: Please update it using the Earfun app (Android or iOS) and select an Oluv EQ. The Earfun app has sound profiles created by Oluv for Studio, Indoor, Indoor+, Outdoor, Outdoor+, BOOM xxX, and Ground 0 which are all fantastic. Oluv has a newer firmware pack that brings it up a few more notches of neutral
