Buy the UBoom X if you can still find one, after updating its firmware first. Buy the Stormbox Blast if you want the same tier of performance currently in production.

Short answer: the UBoom X, and it isn’t close. It ranks #1 of 75 boombox speakers at $159.99, discontinued or not. The Stormbox Blast, a genuinely excellent speaker in its own right, ranks #2 at $179.99, $20 more.

The UBoom X was tuned by Oluv, and it shows. Our notes call it possibly the best-sounding modern Bluetooth speaker, only slightly behind the Vifa Helsinki, with deeper bass than the Blast and the unusual trait of sounding correct at every volume level because it applies a different EQ curve per level rather than one fixed setting.

There’s one real catch: the out-of-box firmware. The 0.33 firmware and its default EQ are described in our notes as sounding horrible. You need to update it and load the tuned settings before the speaker performs the way its ranking suggests, and a small number of users report TWS interruptions that disabling AAC tends to fix.

Both are genuinely great; the UBoom X just measures better. The Blast isn’t a consolation prize. It’s the current #2 in a 75-speaker class and would be the easy recommendation if the UBoom X weren’t sitting at #1.

Buy the UBoom X if you can still find one, after updating its firmware first. Buy the Stormbox Blast if you want the same tier of performance currently in production.

The Two Speakers In Full

Earfun Uboom X: $159.99 Discontinued Myearfun eBay

Pros: Tuned by Oluv and he knocked it out of the park again. Deeper bass than the Stormbox Blast. Extremely neutral, possibly the best of any modern Bluetooth speaker slightly behind the Vifa Helsinki. This is the only speaker that sounds correct at every single volume level due to Oluv’s individual EQ settings at each volume level. Other speakers will need a different EQ at each volume level. Amazing sounding at low levels as it boosts bass and treble at low levels to account for the equal-loudness contour. Just considering the midrange and treble, this speaker is better sounding than the Earfun Uboom L. Measured bass extension of ~38Hz (-10dB).

Cons: The out of the box 0.33 firmware and EQ sounds horrible. Some users have reported sound interruption issues when running two in TWS, though not on every source device, and disabling AAC resolves it where it occurs. Discontinued.

Setup: Please update it using the Earfun app (Android or iOS) and select an Oluv EQ. The Earfun app has sound profiles created by Oluv for Studio, Indoor, Indoor+, Outdoor, Outdoor+, BOOM xxX, and Ground 0 which are all fantastic. Oluv has a newer firmware pack that brings it up a few more notches of neutral

Tribit Stormbox Blast: $179.99 Amazon eBay

Pros: Amazing speaker given its size, competes well with some speakers in the Party size class, bass almost as deep as a Partybox 100. Quite neutral in the default and xbass modes, but try Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ for a slightly more neutral sound. Oluv has mentioned v3.5 now uses his EQ as the defaults and sounds extremely good. 2 different light modes or can be turned off. Measured bass extension of 43Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Lacks a bit of detail compared to the top ranked speakers in other size categories, dip at 5.5kHz. Without the above EQ this speaker would rank around #4 in the rankings. The curved underside of the handle makes it a little harder to grip and can be uncomfortable to carry long distances.
