Monster Rockin' Roller 270 vs Turtlebox

Last updated: October 5, 2026

Short answer: the Monster Rockin’ Roller 270, if you are buying new, though neither ranks well in its class. The Turtlebox measures as well as it (#87 vs #84 of 91 boombox speakers, 2.1/5 vs 2.1/5) but is discontinued, so only consider it used; the Monster Rockin’ Roller 270 is still sold new at $249. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 91 boombox speakers, so if sound quality matters, consider the Tribit Stormbox Blast instead, ranked #2 at $179.99.

Monster Rockin’ Roller 270 vs Turtlebox

The Monster Rockin’ Roller 270 is the deeper-bass, longer-running option. 100 hour battery life. Its bass reaches about 53Hz before falling 10dB, against 65Hz for the Turtlebox. It is rated for 100 hours of battery against 25 for the Turtlebox. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox lacks. Watch for: Bass not as deep as competitors, less neutral than ION speakers.

The Turtlebox is the lighter, tougher choice. Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. At 10 lbs (4.54 kg) it weighs much less than the Monster Rockin’ Roller 270 at 28.7 lbs (13 kg). It is rated IP67 against IPX4 for the Monster Rockin’ Roller 270. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Monster Rockin’ Roller 270. The catch: Sounds basically identical to the later Gen 2 and Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.

Buy the Monster Rockin’ Roller 270 new; the Turtlebox is no longer sold new, so it only makes sense as a used find.

Turtlebox ranking card

Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5.

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Gen 2 and Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.
