Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 76 boombox speakers; for better sound, the Tribit Stormbox Blast ranks #2 at $179.99.
These are the same speaker sonically. Both use the identical 6x9-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter combination, and both reviews describe it bluntly: it looks like a generic car two-way 6x9 speaker in a plastic box, with barely any bass and rattling at high volume. Neither review credits either generation’s advertised specs, and both note the speakers never hit their claimed output at a proper 1-meter measuring distance. Each generation mainly added features, not sound quality, so buying the newer model for better audio isn’t a real reason to spend more.
What the Gen 3 adds: USB-C charging in place of the original’s external AC power brick, USB-C power bank output to charge other devices, true multi-speaker Turtlebox Party Mode beyond basic stereo pairing, and a newer Bluetooth 5.4 radio versus 4.0.
Everything else matches: the same 25-hour battery rating, the same IP67 rating, the same 50W output, and the same dimensions and weight.
Buy the original Turtlebox used if you find one cheap and don’t care about party mode or USB-C charging, since the sound is the same either way.
Buy the Gen 3 if you want USB-C convenience and true multi-speaker linking, understanding you’re paying more for features, not better sound.

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25+ hour battery life. USB-C charging and USB-C output charges other devices. True multi-speaker Party Mode added on top of stereo pairing, plus Bluetooth 5.4. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Sounds basically identical to the original and the Gen 2: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. They pretty much lie about all their specs and sound horrible in all youtube sound samples. Will never hit its claimed 120db at a reasonable measuring distance. Putting your db meter right against the speaker doesn’t count, 1 meter distance is the standard. Barely any bass. Rattles at high volume. Looking at it, it appears to be a generic car 2-way 6x9 speaker in a plastic box.
