JBL Partybox Ultimate 2 vs JBL Partybox 720

The 720 is the one you can take anywhere. It runs on two removable batteries with a rated 15 hours, adds wheels, a light show, Auracast and app EQ, and independent testing confirms very high output and strong bass for a battery speaker. Its front-facing driver layout is uneven to listeners at the sides or behind it, and the bass compresses at very high volume.

The Partybox Ultimate 2 is the more powerful, mains-only speaker. JBL rates it at 1500W RMS against the 720’s 800W, with dual 264mm subwoofers and horn-loaded tweeters against the 720’s dual 9-inch woofers and dual dome tweeters. It also adds Wi-Fi with AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Spotify Connect and an optical input, while the 720 has no Wi-Fi.

Weight and durability are close. The 720 is 31kg against the 47.68kg Ultimate 2, and both are IPX4. Neither is a one-person carry over distance, but the 720 is the lighter of the two and the only one that works away from a power socket.

Older model: the JBL Partybox Ultimate (rated 4.7/5).

Pros: A 1500W RMS system (up from the original Ultimate’s 1100W) driving dual 264mm subwoofers, dual 124mm mid-range drivers and dual 30mm horn-loaded PEN tweeters, with manufacturer-rated extension to 28Hz (-6dB) from a 1.05m-tall cabinet. Wi-Fi streaming with AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Spotify Connect sits alongside Bluetooth 5.3 and Auracast multi-speaker linking. Inputs cover an XLR line-in, mic, guitar, aux, optical and USB-C playback, and karaoke gets AI vocal removal. JBL One app control, a full-panel light show with floor projection, and wheels plus a handle for its 47.68kg. IPX4 splash resistance.

Cons: AC-only: there is no battery, so it needs mains power wherever it goes. At 47.68kg and just over a metre tall it is still a two-person lift despite the wheels, and 47.68kg is heavier than the 39kg model it replaces. IPX4 only shrugs off splashes, not rain or dust. No independent measurements have been published yet, so its real output and sound quality can’t be compared with ranked speakers. Not yet sold in the US.

Pros: JBL’s most powerful battery-equipped PartyBox combines 800W output, two removable batteries, wheels, a light show, Auracast, USB-C playback, app EQ and karaoke/guitar inputs. Independent testing confirms very high output, strong bass and a flexible 5- or 7-band EQ; it can easily cover a backyard or large event.

Cons: At 31kg and 94cm tall, it is still cumbersome despite the wheels. Its front-facing vertical driver layout gives uneven sound to listeners at the sides or behind it, bass compresses at very high volume and reviewers note a faint hiss. The default is dark/bass-heavy, so use the app EQ and do not expect a neutral indoor hi-fi speaker.
