The Grip’s own cons are blunt about where it lands in the JBL lineup: lacking deeper bass, called the worst of the JBL line until you get down to the smaller Clip, with not as much clarity as higher ranked speakers, rolled off highs, and a wavy midrange. Its pros are limited to an ambient light on the back with settable themes, a cosmetic extra rather than a sound advantage.
The Ranger’s complaints are less severe. Its cons describe the bass as thuddy and not as deep as higher ranked speakers, and call it overpriced and heavy for its size, but its pros claim a smoother frequency response than the other Turtlebox models along with a magnetic mount the Grip doesn’t offer.
What the Grip has going for it: at 0.8 lbs (385 g) it is less than half the Ranger’s 2.4 lbs (1089 g), making it a far easier speaker to clip to a bag or carry one-handed.
Buy the Ranger if sound quality and a rugged magnetic mount matter more than size and weight.
Buy the Grip only if you specifically want the smallest, lightest option and can accept its own cons rating it near the bottom of JBL’s current lineup.
