Short answer: the Charge 6, unless you specifically need the Xtreme’s extra size and bass. The Charge 6 ranks #11 of 135 medium speakers at $199.95. The Xtreme 4 costs almost double at $380 and ranks #36 of 76 in the large class, a weaker relative placement despite the size step up.
The Xtreme 4 has a flaw EQ can’t fix. Our notes describe a dip running from the upper bass into the midrange that makes it sound strange, and crucially that dip cannot be corrected with the app EQ, the same limitation covered in the Xtreme 5 vs Xtreme 4 comparison. It also boosts the upper mids and treble at high volume.
The Charge 6 is the more neutral speaker of the two, on paper. It’s flatter through the mids and treble than the Charge 5 it replaced, though it still has boosted bass by default and gets bright above 2kHz. Both benefit from a corrected EQ; the Charge 6’s problems are just more correctable ones.
Size is the real reason to consider the Xtreme 4 anyway. A removable battery and genuinely bigger cabinet mean more output and a speaker that can outlive its cells, if the higher price and the uncorrectable dip don’t bother you.
Buy the Charge 6 for the better-ranked, better-value speaker. Buy the Xtreme 4 only if you specifically need the larger size and the removable battery.

JBL Charge 6: $199.95 Amazon Bhphotovideo
Pros: Seems more neutral than the Charge 5. Flatter frequency response through the mids and treble as the Charge 5 was quite rolled off up high. Use this EQ from Joy/Oluv and turn down the lowest bass slider for the best sound quality. Oluv has even more paid EQs specifically for the GG and TL models indoors and outdoors here
Cons: Still some boosted bass by default. Mids are recessed. Bright above 2khz. Quite a V shaped frequency response.

JBL Xtreme 4: $380 Amazon Bhphotovideo
Pros: Removable battery. Slightly deeper bass than Xtreme 3. Use this EQ for the best sound quality.
Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. Dip in the upper bass to midrange makes it sound strange which cannot be EQd out. Some upper mids and treble boost at high levels.
