Short answer: the Xtreme 5, and skip the Xtreme 4 entirely. This is the most lopsided generational comparison on the site.
The Xtreme 4 ranks #36 out of 75 large speakers and costs $380. The Xtreme 5 ranks #2 and costs $349.95. The newer speaker is better and cheaper. There is no configuration of preferences under which the Xtreme 4 is the right purchase at list price.
It gets worse for the Xtreme 4. The Xtreme 3 — two generations old — ranks #18 at about $270, which is to say the Xtreme 4 is outranked by both its predecessor and its successor while being the most expensive of the three.
Why the Xtreme 4 measures badly. It has a dip running from the upper bass into the midrange that makes it sound strange, and crucially that dip cannot be EQ’d out — you can pull a boost down, but you cannot fill in energy the driver never produced. It also boosts the upper mids and treble at high volume.
The Xtreme 5 is not flawless either. It has its own hole in the mid-upper bass that also resists EQ, and some bass boost. It is still one of the best large portables made, and it measures far better than the 4.
Beyond the tuning, the Xtreme 5 wins on nearly every spec: 28 hours against 24, IP68 against IP67, 110 dB against 106 dB, a 7-band EQ against 5, USB audio, and a removable battery — the single best reason to buy it, since it means the speaker outlives its cells.
The one thing the Xtreme 4 wins: weight, 2.1 kg against 2.9 kg. If that matters more to you than everything above, the large size ranking has better options at that weight.
Buy the Xtreme 5. If it is out of budget, buy the Tribit Stormbox Lava at $100, which ranks #3.
