Short answer: the SVS SB-1000 PRO. It ranks #4 of 73 subwoofers by sound quality (rated 3.7/5) at $599 and is still sold new; the GoldenEar ForceField 3 ranks #24 (rated 3.4/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The GoldenEar ForceField 3’s replacement, the GoldenEar ForceField 30, is rated 3.4/5 at $599.99.
The SVS SB-1000 PRO is the better-sounding choice. A compact sealed subwoofer with tight bass and huge output for its weight, best for music and small rooms. The tradeoff: As a sealed box it gives up output in the deepest octave: 91dB at 20Hz and 97.7dB at 25Hz, where a ported subwoofer like the RSL (Rogersound Labs) Speedwoofer 10S MKII reaches 100dB and 105dB.
What the GoldenEar ForceField 3 does well: A discontinued compact 8 inch subwoofer with a passive radiator that adds midbass support to a modest system. The tradeoff: Without a published 20 Hz result, deep-bass capability is less certain than the midbass figure.
Buy the SVS SB-1000 PRO. It is rated higher for sound quality; the GoldenEar ForceField 3 is no longer sold new.
