Short answer: the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt, if you are buying new. The Onkyo SKW-204 ranks higher than it (#3 vs #46 of 73 subwoofers, 3.8/5 vs 3.2/5) but is discontinued, so only consider it used; the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt is still sold new at $224.99.
What the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt does well: A low cost ported 8 inch subwoofer with a 200 watt amp, an easy entry point for a first subwoofer. Watch for: Very compact 18.5 lbs (8.4 kg) size, limited 106.4 dB output, ported room interaction, and entry-level build.
The Onkyo SKW-204 is the better-sounding pick. A discontinued ported 10 inch subwoofer with strong upper bass punch for movies and music at a budget price. The tradeoff: Deep-bass output is more limited than the strong 40-80 Hz result suggests, so it is not the right choice when the lowest movie effects are the priority.
Buy the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt, since the Onkyo SKW-204 is discontinued and only worth hunting down used.
