Marshall Middleton vs Marshall Tufton

Last updated: October 3, 2026

These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Marshall Middleton ranks #34 of 97 large speakers by sound quality at $211.83; the Marshall Tufton ranks #76 of 90 boombox speakers by sound quality at $378.99.

Marshall Middleton vs Marshall Tufton

The Marshall Middleton is the lighter, tougher option. Very deep bass for the size/weight. At 4 lbs (1.8 kg) it weighs much less than the Marshall Tufton at 10.8 lbs (4.9 kg). It is rated IPX7 against IPX2 for the Marshall Tufton. It links with other speakers (Marshall Stack), which the Marshall Tufton cannot. The catch: 5db dip at 1.7kHz and 6.3kHz.

Why pick the Marshall Tufton: 20 hour battery life; 2.5 hour full charge, or 20-min quick-charge for 4 hours of play. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Marshall Middleton lacks. The tradeoff: Not much lower bass, upper bass boomy, boosted treble, not very balanced overall.

Buy the Marshall Middleton ($211.83) for a large speaker; the Marshall Tufton ($378.99) suits a boombox speaker instead.

Marshall Middleton ranking card

Newer model: the Marshall Middleton II, ranked higher, rated 4.1/5.

Pros: Very deep bass for the size/weight. Measured bass extension of 39Hz (-10dB).

Cons: 5db dip at 1.7kHz and 6.3kHz. 9kHz treble peak. Not a very smooth frequency response. A lot of Marshall’s added dsp echo which cannot be turned off, very distracting and annoying. It’s like forcing you to listen to your music in an echo chamber. Bass is reasonably deep but artificial sounding and flabby, with no attack and no dynamics. Treble is rolled off.
