JBL Charge 6 vs Turtlebox

Last updated: October 14, 2026

These sit in different size classes, so this is not a straight ranking comparison. The JBL Charge 6 ranks #12 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality at $119.95; the Turtlebox ranks #94 of 99 boombox speakers by sound quality at $329.

JBL Charge 6 vs Turtlebox

The JBL Charge 6 is the deeper-bass, lighter option. Seems more neutral than the JBL Charge 5. Its bass reaches about 53Hz before falling 10dB, against 65Hz for the Turtlebox. At 2.2 lbs (990 g) it weighs much less than the Turtlebox at 10 lbs (4.54 kg). It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Turtlebox lacks. The catch: Still some boosted bass by default.

Why pick the Turtlebox: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. It keeps a wired aux input, which the JBL Charge 6 lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the JBL Charge 6. Watch for: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.

Worth knowing: the Turtlebox has been discontinued and is hard to find new at this point. The Turtlebox’s replacement, the Turtlebox Gen 3, is still sold new.

Buy the JBL Charge 6 at $119.95 if you want a medium speaker. Buy the Turtlebox at $329 if you want a boombox speaker instead.

JBL Charge 6 ranking card

Older models: the JBL Charge 5 (ranked lower, rated 4/5), the JBL Charge 4 (ranked lower, rated 3.5/5), the JBL Charge 3 (ranked lower, rated 3.2/5) and the JBL Charge 2 (ranked lower, rated 3.2/5). See every JBL Charge generation.

Pros: Seems more neutral than the JBL Charge 5. Flatter frequency response through the mids and treble as the JBL Charge 5 was quite rolled off up high. Use this EQ from Joy/Oluv and turn down the lowest bass slider for the best sound quality. Oluv has even more paid EQs specifically for the GG and TL models indoors and outdoors here. IP68 protection, a 7-band app EQ, Auracast, USB-C charging and a power bank output. With EQ it beat the Marshall Stockwell III in Alan Ross’s live A/B. Measured bass extension of 53Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Still some boosted bass by default. Mids are recessed. Bright above 2kHz. Quite a V shaped frequency response.

Turtlebox ranking card

Newer model: the Turtlebox Gen 3, ranked higher, rated 2.1/5, released Feb 2025. See every Turtlebox generation.

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume). Pairs with a second unit for stereo. Measured bass extension of ~65Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Sounds basically identical to the later Turtlebox Gen 2 and Turtlebox Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. The nearly identical Turtlebox Gen 3 measured a V shaped tuning, with boosted lows and highs and dipped mids, yet bass only down 10dB at about 65Hz, and only about 12W RMS from its amp; Turtlebox rated this one at just 50W. It rattles at high volume. Nowhere near its claimed 120dB at a standard one meter distance. It charges from an external AC power brick. Inside is essentially a car audio 6x9 two way speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.
