These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The JBL Charge 6 ranks #12 of 179 medium speakers by sound quality at $149.95; the Sony ULT Field 5 ranks #59 of 120 large speakers by sound quality at $348.
The Charge 6 is the smaller, more accurate speaker. At under 2.2 lbs (1 kg) it carries easily, and it is more neutral than earlier Charges, though still a little V-shaped with boosted bass and bright treble. It is rated for 24 hours, is IP68, and has a 7-band EQ and Auracast. Alan Ross measured 102dB at full volume.
The ULT Field 5 is the bigger, bass-first speaker for a yard. At 7.3 lbs (3.3 kg) it plays in stereo with two tweeters and a large woofer, and adds LDAC, an aux input and Sony’s ULT bass modes. Reviewers find it energetic and loud enough outdoors, but its upper mids and highs are subdued, and stereo separation is limited from one box.
Buy the JBL Charge 6 at $149.95 for a medium speaker, or the Sony ULT Field 5 at $348 for a large speaker instead.
