Short answer: the JBL Charge 6. It ranks #11 of 144 medium speakers by sound quality, rated 4.2/5, at $149.95; the JBL Charge Essential 3 SE ranks #40, rated 3.7/5, and costs $199.95, so there is little reason to consider the other one.
Side by side, the Charge 6 is the better speaker. In a direct listening comparison, the Charge Essential 3 SE had weaker, less stable bass that distorted on bass-heavy tracks even with the bass turned down, and a narrow upper mid boost that sounded less natural. The Charge 6 was fuller, tighter and cleaner.
The Charge 6 also has more features: IP68 against IP67, a claimed 24 hours of battery against 20, a 7-band app EQ, and an Oluv EQ linked on its page that makes it more neutral still. It is bass boosted and a little V-shaped by default.
What the Essential 3 SE offers: Bluetooth 5.4 with LC3, Auracast stereo pairing, a USB-C power bank and a separate tweeter in the same Charge-size body. In the US it is sold only through JBL’s own store at $199.95, so check that against the Charge 6’s current $149.95 before choosing it.
Buy the JBL Charge 6. It is rated higher for sound quality than the JBL Charge Essential 3 SE and costs less, so it is the default pick unless a specific strength of the other one matters more to you.

Older models: the JBL Charge 5 (rated 4/5), the JBL Charge 4 (rated 3.5/5), the JBL Charge 3 (rated 3.2/5) and the JBL Charge 2 (rated 3.2/5).
Pros: Seems more neutral than the Charge 5. Flatter frequency response through the mids and treble as the Charge 5 was quite rolled off up high. Use this EQ from Joy/Oluv and turn down the lowest bass slider for the best sound quality. Oluv has even more paid EQs specifically for the GG and TL models indoors and outdoors here IP68 protection, a 7-band app EQ, Auracast, USB-C charging and a power bank output. Measured bass extension of 53Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Still some boosted bass by default. Mids are recessed. Bright above 2kHz. Quite a V shaped frequency response.

JBL Charge Essential 3 SE: $199.95 JBL eBay

Pros: Gets louder than the Bose SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen and digs deeper in the bass, with a separate 20mm tweeter, two passive radiators and 40W of amplification in the familiar Charge body. IP67 water and dust protection, a claimed 20 hours of battery life, a USB-C power bank output, Auracast stereo pairing and multi-speaker linking, Bluetooth 5.4 with AAC, and app EQ.
Cons: In side-by-side listening against the Charge 6, its bass is weaker and less stable and distorts on bass-heavy tracks even with the bass turned down in the app, while a narrow boost in the upper mids makes it sound less natural. Against the Bose SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen it sounds muddier and more strident, with less detail and a smaller soundstage. At full price it costs as much as the Charge 6, which is the better speaker.
