Short answer: the Charge 6 for tuning control, the Charge Essential 2 to save money. These rank #11 and #37 out of 145 medium speakers, and the price difference is $19.95.
The two share the same core hardware. Both use a 53mm x 93mm woofer paired with a 20mm tweeter, and their measured bass extension is nearly identical: 53Hz on the Charge 6 versus roughly 55Hz on the Essential 2. Neither speaker is stereo. Our notes on the Charge 6 describe it as more neutral than the Charge 5, with a flatter response through the mids and treble, though it still runs a somewhat V-shaped curve with boosted bass and some brightness above 2kHz. The Charge Essential 2’s own notes say it gets close to Charge 5 performance for less money, with only slightly less bass.
What the Charge 6 adds that the Essential 2 drops:
- A companion app with a 7-band EQ, useful given the Charge 6’s V-shaped tuning out of the box. The Essential 2 has no app and no EQ at all.
- Auracast party mode, absent on the Essential 2.
- A higher IP68 rating versus IPX7 on the Essential 2, plus support for the AAC codec on top of SBC.
- USB-C digital aux input, which the Essential 2 does not have.
Everything else is close: both charge over USB-C, both work as a power bank (USB-C on the Charge 6, USB-A on the Essential 2), and the two are within about 60 g of each other in weight.
Buy the Charge 6 if you want the app-based EQ to tame its V-shaped sound, plus Auracast and the better water resistance rating.
Buy the Charge Essential 2 if you just want Charge-level sound for less money and don’t need an app, EQ, or Auracast.

Pros: Seems more neutral than the Charge 5. Flatter frequency response through the mids and treble as the Charge 5 was quite rolled off up high. Use this EQ from Joy/Oluv and turn down the lowest bass slider for the best sound quality. Oluv has even more paid EQs specifically for the GG and TL models indoors and outdoors here. IP68 protection, a 7-band app EQ, Auracast, USB-C charging and a power bank output. Measured bass extension of 53Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Still some boosted bass by default. Mids are recessed. Bright above 2kHz. Quite a V shaped frequency response.

Newer model: the JBL Charge Essential 3 SE, ranked lower, rated 3.7/5.
Pros: A tough, compact 930g speaker with IPX7 water resistance, USB-C charging, a USB-A power-bank output and a claimed 20-hour battery life. It delivers much of the Charge 5’s familiar punch and volume in a simpler package, with bass that reaches roughly 55Hz for this size. Measured bass extension of ~55Hz (-10dB).
Cons: It is a pared-back Charge: no app EQ, no PartyBoost/party mode and no stereo-pair option. It plays mono, has a little less bass authority than the Charge 5, and its IPX7 rating does not promise dust protection. Choose it for a good sale price, not for extra features.
