The Bose Soundlink Flex is the louder, tougher option. A small, rugged waterproof speaker that survives drops and floats, with a warm, bass forward sound for casual outdoor use. Alan Ross Reviews measured it at 96dB at full volume, against 92dB for the Minirig Mini. It is rated IP67 against Splash resistant for the Minirig Mini. It links with other speakers (Bose Party mode), which the Minirig Mini cannot. Watch for: Warm sounding with overly boosted bass which drowns out midrange detail.
The Minirig Mini is the lighter pick. A now discontinued tiny speaker with very neutral sound and unusually deep bass for its size, worth buying used. At 0.7 lbs (314 g) it weighs much less than the Bose Soundlink Flex at 1.3 lbs (589 g). It supports aptX Bluetooth, which the Bose Soundlink Flex lacks. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Bose Soundlink Flex lacks. The tradeoff: Calls itself splash resistant and has no official water rating.
One note: the Minirig Mini is discontinued, but it still ranks #4 of 62 small speakers by sound quality, ahead of most of what is still sold new, so it is worth considering used. The Minirig Mini’s replacement, the Minirig Mini 2, is still sold new.
Buy the Bose Soundlink Flex at $79.99 for a medium speaker, or the Minirig Mini at $100 for a small speaker instead.
