Short answer: the Minirig Mini 2. It ranks #4 of 47 small portable speakers by sound quality, just ahead of the original Mini at #3, and both cost the same.
The core sound is identical between them. Both use the same 52mm custom neodymium driver and reach the same 58Hz bass extension, and both get the same praise for being very neutral with much deeper bass than most speakers their size, plus the same modular design that lets you attach a subwoofer. The two share the same weak points too: both call themselves splash resistant without an official water rating, and both have a reputation for a buggy companion app.
The Mini 2’s upgrades are all in the details around that shared sound. It adds AAC to the original’s aptX and SBC codec support, extends battery life from 10 hours to 12, and lets you pair two units wirelessly over Bluetooth for true stereo, where the original Mini could only do that over a physical cable.
One note: the Minirig Mini is discontinued, but it still ranks #4 of 47 small speakers by sound quality, ahead of most of what is still sold new, so it is worth considering used.
Buy the Minirig Mini 2. It ranks marginally higher for sound quality, adds real functional upgrades, and costs the same as the discontinued original.
Buy the Minirig Mini only if you find one used for meaningfully less than the Mini 2’s price, since the sound difference between them is minor.
