Short answer: the Ranger, unless you specifically need the Roll 2’s flat, hangable shape. These rank #62 and #158 out of 173 portable speakers, with the Ranger at $250 and the Roll 2 at $100. The Ultimate Ears Roll 2 is discontinued; its replacement is the Ultimate Ears Miniroll.
Bass is the biggest gap. The Roll 2’s cons state it has barely any bass and rolled off treble off axis. The Ranger’s cons also flag thuddy bass that isn’t as deep as higher ranked speakers, but that’s still an improvement over the Roll 2’s near-total lack of low end.
The Roll 2’s whole design is about portability, not output. Its pros describe a thin, flat profile that fits easily in a bag or purse, a light 0.73 lbs (331 g) weight, and a built-in bungee cord for hanging from a hook, nail, or door handle. The Ranger instead leans on magnets for attaching to metal surfaces and a build its pros call quite tough. The Roll 2 also isn’t stereo capable, while the Ranger supports true wireless stereo pairing with a second unit.
Buy the Ranger for meaningfully better sound and stereo pairing, if the size and price are acceptable.
Buy the Roll 2 only if the flat, hangable form factor is what you actually need and sound quality is secondary.
