Short answer: the Turtlebox Ranger, if you can stretch the budget. These rank #62 and #145 out of 173 portable speakers, and the price gap is large at $23 for the Stormbox Mini against $250 for the Ranger. The Tribit Stormbox Mini is discontinued; its replacement is the Tribit Stormbox Mini+.
Neither speaker is a bass performer, but for different reasons. The Ranger’s cons note its bass sounds thuddy and doesn’t dig as deep as higher ranked speakers, while the Stormbox Mini’s cons describe it as lacking quite a bit of bass and sounding hollow and thuddy overall. The Ranger at least pairs that with a tougher build: its pros call out how it appears to be quite tough, with magnets for attaching it to things, and an IP67 rating.
Build and use case are genuinely different. The Ranger is a rugged, pocketable outdoor speaker meant to survive drops and spray, while the Stormbox Mini is a cheap grab-and-go speaker with RGB lighting and true wireless stereo pairing. The Stormbox Mini has also been discontinued and retired by Tribit in favor of the Stormbox Mini+, so new stock will get harder to find.
Buy the Ranger if you want a speaker built to take abuse outdoors and don’t mind paying more for that toughness.
Buy the Stormbox Mini only if budget is the deciding factor and you can find one in stock, understanding that sound quality is a weak point on both of these.
