These are different sizes, not rivals. The Boom 2 is a large speaker at 1.68 kg with a 120mm x 90mm woofer, two tweeters and 80W. The Boom 3i is a medium speaker at 783 g with a single woofer and tweeter and 50W. Each is rated against its own size class, so the question is whether you want to carry the bigger one.

What the Boom 2 gets you: much deeper bass, reaching down to about 47Hz against the Boom 3i’s 56Hz, and around 105dB of measured output. It also has partial stereo through its two tweeters, a claimed 24 hours of battery, a USB-A power bank output and PartyCast linking. It is at its best with BassUp off and one of the community EQs linked on its page, since the stock tuning is bass heavy and a little bright.

What the Boom 3i gets you: IP68 protection against the Boom 2’s IPX7, a design that floats, a built-in microphone for calls and AAC for iPhone users. It is tuned warm like a JBL Charge 5 and sounds very close to one. The trade is less volume, less bass depth and 16 hours of claimed battery instead of 24.

Know this about the Boom 2: its processing makes some bass notes drop out at low volume, so it is not the pick for quiet background listening.

Older model: the Soundcore Motion Boom (rated 4.5/5).

Pros: Pretty deep bass for the size. Cool lights in the side passive radiators. For the best sound quality use Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ. With the stock tuning, this speaker would rank around #24, due to the boosted bass and rising treble. Measured bass extension of 47Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Only a single midrange driver, so you only get stereo for the tweeters. Sound processing issues with inconsistent bass notes that disappear at low levels like the Soundcore Boom and Soundcore Boost, not great for listening at low levels. Quite bass heavy with BassUp turned on, which is best left off. A little bit of a bright tuning in the treble, about +5db.

Pros: Looks to be designed as a direct competitor to the Charge 5 with a very similar sound profile, warm tuned with boosted bass. Better value for the money than the Charge 5. Measured bass extension of 56Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Not quite as good as a Charge 5, doesn’t go quite as loud or sound quite as balanced, but very very close. An earlier firmware version had some bass distortion, update your firmware in the Soundcore App
