Short answer: the Xtreme 5 is genuinely better, but the Boom 2 is the better value. The Xtreme 5 ranks #2 of 78 large speakers at $399.95; the Boom 2 ranks #10 at $99.99, a difference of $299.96. That’s a big enough gap in price that most buyers should still consider the Boom 2 first.
The Xtreme 5 wins on sound, not just spec sheet numbers. Reviewers describe it as a fantastic-sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion and bass that reaches well below 40Hz, explicitly beating the Boom 2 on both bass depth and clarity. It also plays clean at higher volume, which our notes contrast with the JBL Boombox 4’s tendency to distort. None of that comes stock, though: the default EQ presets are weak, with Signature described as boring and Chill and Vocal as close to unusable, so getting the best sound out of it means running a custom EQ.
The Boom 2 has its own sound issues to work around. It ships bass-heavy and treble-bright out of the box, roughly +5dB hot in the highs, and has sound processing issues where bass notes can disappear at low listening levels, the same complaint noted on the Soundcore Boom and Boost. Our notes say that with stock tuning it would only rank around the middle of the pack; a custom EQ (Oluv’s or Alan Ross’s) is what gets it into genuinely competitive territory for its price.
Both are only partially stereo, using a single central woofer with stereo tweeters rather than a true left/right pair, so the spatial difference between them is smaller than the price gap suggests.
Buy the JBL Xtreme 5 if sound quality is the priority and the price doesn’t rule it out; it’s a clear step up in bass depth and clean output at volume.
Buy the Soundcore Boom 2 if you want most of that performance for a fraction of the cost and are willing to run a custom EQ to fix its stock tuning.

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.
Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable) - needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the Xtreme 4.

Soundcore Boom 2: $99.99 Amazon B&H Photo Video eBay
Pros: Pretty deep bass for the size. Cool lights in the side passive radiators. For the best sound quality use Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ. With the stock tuning, this speaker would rank around #24, due to the boosted bass and rising treble. Measured bass extension of 47Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Only a single midrange driver, so you only get stereo for the tweeters. Sound processing issues with inconsistent bass notes that disappear at low levels like the Soundcore Boom and Soundcore Boost, not great for listening at low levels. Quite bass heavy with BassUp turned on, which is best left off. A little bit of a bright tuning in the treble, about +5db.
