The Encore 2 improves the original with dome tweeters, a less boomy balance, slightly deeper bass, longer battery life and two included wireless microphones. Its bass reaches about 42Hz before falling 10dB, against 49Hz for the Sony SRS-XG500. Watch for: It still lacks some upper-bass punch and cannot match the scale of the larger PartyBoxes.
The Sony SRS-XG500 is the longer-running, tougher pick. 30 hour battery life; 10-min quick-charge gives 3 hours. It is rated for 30 hours of battery against 15 for the JBL Partybox Encore 2. It is rated IP66 against IPX4 for the JBL Partybox Encore 2. It supports LDAC Bluetooth, which the JBL Partybox Encore 2 lacks. Watch for: Thuddy upper bass, not as deep bass as others.
