Short answer: the JBL Flip 7, and it is worth the extra money. It ranks #15 of 164 medium speakers against the Flip 4’s #82, for $49.95 more at $119.95 versus $70.
The Flip 4’s own cons are a real warning sign. They state plainly that battery failures are common, on top of a peaky lower treble and less bass than the newer Flip 5 that replaced it. It also lacks a companion app or EQ entirely, so there is no way to tune around its tonal issues the way you can on the Flip 7.
The Flip 7 is a genuinely neutral, current-generation speaker. Its pros describe it as very neutral and small, almost pocket size, with slightly deeper bass and a touch more treble than the well-regarded Flip 6. Its only flaw is a small bump at 4kHz that keeps it just short of the Flip 6’s flatness. Reviewers including GYMCADDY and Chrispy Things [EDC] have direct sound comparisons between the Flip 7 and Flip 6 if you want more detail.
What the Flip 7 adds that the Flip 4 never had: a 7-band EQ via the JBL app, USB-C charging and digital audio input in place of Micro-USB, a higher IP68 rating against IPX7, Auracast party pairing, and a materially higher 100dB max volume against the Flip 4’s 92dB.
Buy the JBL Flip 7 for reliable, better-tuned sound backed by an active warranty rather than a discontinued model with known battery problems.
Buy the JBL Flip 4 only if you find one at a steep discount and accept the risk of battery failure on an unsupported, discontinued speaker.

Pros: A very neutral speaker, very small, almost pocket size. Just slightly more treble than the Flip 6 which was already a great speaker. Slightly deeper bass than the Flip 6. IP68 protection, a 7-band app EQ, Auracast and a USB-C digital audio input. Measured bass extension of 59Hz (-10dB).
Cons: A little bit of a bump at 4kHz, not quite as neutral as the Flip 6. On balance it is the slightly worse of the two.

Pros: At 510 g, JBL Flip 4 combines 2x 40mm fullrange with Bluetooth and aux. Claimed 12 hours (manufacturer specified) battery life, ipx7 protection, up to 92db and single-box playback make its feature set practical for its intended room or portable use. Measured bass extension of 66Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Bass is limited by its 66Hz specification. There is no companion app. No EQ adjustment. Battery failures are common. Discontinued.
