Short answer: the Earfun Uboom L. It ranks #15 of 164 medium speakers at $119.95 (after an available coupon code), while the JBL Flip 7 ranks #2 at $49.79. That is a big gap in measured sound quality in the cheaper speaker’s favor.
The Uboom L punches well above its price because of its tuning, not just its hardware. Reviews praise clear vocals, a natural overall balance, and a genuinely convincing stereo image when two units are paired, with IP67 protection and indoor/outdoor sound modes that make it unusually adaptable. Its Video Mode substantially improves lip-sync for a single speaker, though turning on low-latency mode disables stereo pairing, so a two-speaker setup isn’t ideal for movies. Its own notes are also upfront that it cannot produce real low-bass rumble or fill a large, noisy room, and that the top end loses some detail, with firmware and app behavior that has varied over the model’s long life.
The Flip 7 is a genuinely neutral speaker, just not quite as neutral as its own predecessor. Its notes call it very small, almost pocket sized, with slightly more treble and slightly deeper bass than the Flip 6. The tradeoff is a small bump around 4kHz that keeps it from matching the Flip 6’s neutrality, and the site’s own assessment is that this generation is a slight step back from the last one.
Feature-wise the two split in different directions: the Flip 7 adds Auracast party mode, an IP68 rating, and USB-C digital aux input, while the Uboom L counters with TWS stereo pairing, a built-in microphone, aux input, and a slightly longer battery life.
Buy the Earfun Uboom L for dramatically better value and sound quality for the price, especially if you’re willing to pair two for real stereo.
Buy the JBL Flip 7 only if you specifically want Auracast support, IP68 dust and water protection, or JBL’s smaller, more pocketable form factor.

Pros: A very neutral speaker, very small, almost pocket size. Just slightly more treble than the Flip 6 which was already a great speaker. Slightly deeper bass than the Flip 6. IP68 protection, a 7-band app EQ, Auracast and a USB-C digital audio input. Measured bass extension of 59Hz (-10dB).
Cons: A little bit of a bump at 4kHz, not quite as neutral as the Flip 6. On balance it is the slightly worse of the two.

Pros: One of the strongest small-speaker values for music: reviews praise clear vocals, a natural overall balance and a genuinely convincing stereo image when two are paired. IP67 protection, indoor/outdoor sound modes and Video Mode make it unusually adaptable; Video Mode substantially improves lip-sync for a single speaker. Measured bass extension of 56Hz (-10dB).
Cons: It cannot produce real low-bass rumble or fill a large, noisy space, and the top end loses some detail. Low-latency Video Mode disables stereo pairing, so a two-speaker setup is not a good movie system. Firmware and app behavior have also varied over the model’s long life, and the physical controls can be easy to trigger in a bag. Latency is about 400ms by default and 66ms in Video Mode, which you enable by pressing the Bluetooth button twice.
Setup: Try setting up the Earfun App (Android or iOS) to see if that works. If not, you’ll need to flash firmware 1.2.7 to work with the app and set with Oluv’s EQ in the Earfun app which sounds the best. The instructions say that you need a USB3 cable, but most USB2 cables work just fine, try the one included with your phone. Check the current firmware version by turning it on, then pressing the power and Bluetooth buttons at the same time. To flash, turn the speaker off then hold down the Bluetooth button while plugging in the cable. To flash on a mac, see these instructions. In TWS mode, long press the outdoor button for 2 seconds to change TWS to Party mode and back.
