Short answer: this is the top of the medium class: #2 against #3 out of 177 speakers. Either is an excellent buy, and the choice comes down to whether you will open an app.
The UBoom L is the more neutral speaker, and it is neutral without you doing anything. It was tuned by Oluv and is arguably the most accurate modern Bluetooth speaker at any price, with the unusual property of sounding correct at every volume level. Most speakers need a different EQ as you turn them up, because it compensates for the equal-loudness contour. It also costs $49.79, which is less than the Motion 300.
The Motion 300 depends on its EQ. Stock, it is heavily rolled off in the treble and would rank around #50. Corrected, it is #3 and reaches deeper than the UBoom L, 50 Hz against 56 Hz, and supports LDAC.
Practical differences that may decide it:
- Aux input: the UBoom L has one, the Motion 300 does not. Note the UBoom L’s aux is high-latency and not suited to video.
- Battery: 16 hours against 13.
- Weight: 1.4 lbs (650 g) against 1.7 lbs (772 g).
- Water resistance: IP67 against IPX7. The UBoom L also resists dust.
- Latency: the UBoom L’s default is 400 ms unless you enable low-latency mode, which does not work while two are TWS paired. If you watch a lot of video on a paired stereo pair, that is a genuine mark against it.
Buy the UBoom L for the best sound out of the box, the lower price, aux input and longer battery. It is the default recommendation in this class.
Buy the Motion 300 if you want deeper bass and LDAC, will load an EQ preset, and don’t need aux.
