JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Grip

The Flip 6 is the one to buy for sound. It is a two-way speaker, with a dedicated 16mm tweeter beside its racetrack woofer, and it is one of the most neutral speakers in its size class. Its bass reaches about 56Hz before falling 10dB, and it is louder, at 30W against the Grip’s 16W. It also links with up to 100 other JBL speakers through PartyBoost and supports AAC.

The Grip trades sound for size and lighting. At 0.8 lbs (385 g) it is about 0.4 lbs (160 g) lighter than the Flip 6, its IP68 rating is a step above the Flip’s IP67, and the ambient light on the back has settable themes. But its single full-range driver gives up the tweeter, so highs are rolled off, the midrange is uneven and the bass stops around 68Hz. It is the weakest-sounding JBL until you drop to the Clip.

Buy the JBL Flip 6. It is rated higher for sound quality than the JBL Grip and costs less, so it is the default pick unless a specific strength of the other one matters more to you.

Newer model: the JBL Flip 7, ranked lower, rated 4.2/5, released Mar 2025. It adds USB audio input, but drops stereo pairing. Water resistance goes from IP67 to IP68.

Pros: A very neutral speaker, very small, almost pocket size, a huge sound quality leap over the JBL Flip 5. Measured bass extension of 56Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Not stereo. Some slight upper mids emphasis. The TL version (made in Vietnam) tweeter can sound somewhat scratchy and doesn’t sound as good as the GG version (made in China)

Cons: Lacking deeper bass, definitely the worst of the JBL line until you get to the smaller clip. Not as much clarity as higher ranked speakers, rolled off highs and wavy midrange

Setup: EQ from Oluv in his post can help it a bit but still isn’t very neutral
