What the ION Hype XL does well: A five driver boombox with a 5.25 inch woofer, two 2.75 inch midranges, two 1.5 inch tweeters and two passive radiators, rated at 110W. It links with other speakers (Auracast), which the ION Sport Surge cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the ION Sport Surge lacks. Watch for: Its bass is nowhere near as deep as top ranked boomboxes like the Tribit Stormbox Blast and Harman Kardon Go + Play 3, which reach down to about 43 Hz and 35 Hz.
The ION Sport Surge is the longer-running, lighter pick. A true stereo boombox with two 3.5 inch drivers, two 1 inch tweeters and two passive radiators, rated for up to 20 hours of battery at half volume. It is rated for 20 hours of battery against 12 for the ION Hype XL. At 5.4 lbs (2.47 kg) it weighs much less than the ION Hype XL at 12.1 lbs (5.5 kg). The tradeoff: Its bass is nowhere near as deep as top ranked large speakers like the JBL Xtreme 5 and Tribit Stormbox Lava, which reach down to about 43 Hz and 44 Hz.
Buy the ION Hype XL ($99) for a boombox speaker; the ION Sport Surge ($89) suits a large speaker instead.
